Windows XP SP3 (HP laptop) not activated after nasty virus/trojan storm HOW DO I RE-ACTIVATE? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a friend who got a little "click-happy" and accepted "Dr. Guard" which turned out to be more like "Dr. Kevorkian".  One thing led to another and he was unable to run ANYTHING.  Of course he didn't call me until it went this far.  After ripping out a few dozen Trojans, the laptop now reports "A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer.  Error Code: 0x80004005. "

This appears in 32-bit mode, and in safe mode with Networking (I can get to safe mode WITHOUT networking).

I've tried everything I've found from searches, but nothing has helped.  I ran WGA_diag tool and got:

It would be really sweet if I didn't have to re-build this thing from scratch.  Any hope of that?

    Thanks!

  • Hello HughMoto,

Please post your XP activation question here:  http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpinstall/threads

BTW, the "A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer.  Error Code: 0x80004005. " condtion is a PITA and IME more often than not the solution is indeed to blow it up and start over.
