A few months ago I contacted Microsoft about Windows Update not working. A tech helped to work with this issue and after a period of time he stated that I needed to try using the Windows service disk and update w/o authorizing to fill in any corrupted files that made previous attempts unable to fix. I have a store bought PC and it did not have the necessary disk so about a month later I received a replacement disk w/o authorization number. Windows Update was working again but fast forward to now I find that since I don't have an authorization number I have this message at the bottom right of my screen. I've tried to contact the tech's email address as he stated contact if there was an issue but after three days I haven't received a reply.
Also whenever I restart I have a black screen with a choice between two Windows Vista's.

You would appear to have done a parallel install, rather than a repair install - and that requires activation with a valid Product Key.Since you did not input a Key during the install, Windows inserted a non-activatable Keyless Install Key, and that now requires to be replaced by the key on your COA sticker on the case of your machineTo do this, open the System Properties, and look at the bottom of the page - there should be a link to Change Product Key. Use that, and follow the instructions - you may have to use telephone activation.
