New HP WHS won't balance storage... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have the 750gb system they sell, and tossed in a 2nd 500gb... the 500gb is almoast full now, and the system wont balance the data load. I have duplication on for all the main folders... I KNOW i have around 60GB of DVD rips ive made over the past few days, and duplicated should be 120ish, and the WHS console reports 80GB... Main HDD says 20% full... of 750gb means 150 gb of data...

    I just dont get it...

  • When you open up the WHS Console on one of your clients does it say 'Storage balanced on: (date and time)'.

If yes then the balancing service is running, it works once an hour IIRC.

Have you set duplication 'on' for your videos folder?

The balancing name is misleading, it does not balance the data across the discs, it just makes sure all the duplicated files are spread across different physical discs.

The WHS will place new data on the first available disc, then duplicate it as required starting at the last disc with space availble.  The first disc will continue to fill until it has about 20Gbytes of free space, then it will move onto the second disc and so on. There is a Microsoft document available here:

that gives the low down on how the drive extender program works.

    Hope this helps.

  • That makes more sense... the server storage panel has 11% file storage, 11% duplication (cause I have dupe on all folders)... The Disk Management add-in shows the percent of use of each drive... and the slave 500 is @ 79%, the stock 750 is @ 21% right now...

    Thanks for the insight!
