  • Upgraded from S&T 08 to 10. Never had a problem until upgrade.  Running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3, 32 bit,  GPS-500 is recognized, endlessly searching for satellite.  Have clear line of sight to sky. GPS [Status Searching for satellites SATS:0]  ?? Any ideas??

  • Hi Puffer,

When you say you "have a clear line of sight to sky", can the antenna see satellites in different areas of the sky, or it only has good view of the sky in one direction, as for example looking from a window? Take it outdoor for testing, if you can.

If the unit hasn't been used recently, it may take longer time to start working now. Give it 10 even 20 minutes.

Is the unit plugged directly to the USB port of your laptop? If yes, add a USB extension cable between the laptop and the unit, and place the unit a bit further away from the computer (further away from RF interference).

The following discussion may give you more ideas: What can interfere with GPS signal?

  • I would go even further than "different areas". If you having trouble, give it the entire sky.  Consumer devices generally aren't too fussy but they still want more than half the sky visible.

The longer time after it has been used a while, is so that it can download a new almanac from the satellites. These tell it the current orbital parameters. They're usually good for a week, although in reality they downgrade over time (so two weeks is probably still good enough even if they are not too accurate).
