Genuine Advantage Validation fails again RRS feed

  • Question

  • Microsoft Word 2002 (10.6856.6858) SP3 with WinXP

When starting MS Office, either Word or Excel, I receive a friendly pop-up warning me that "This copy of Microsoft Office has not been activated."  Clicking on <HELP> <ACTIVATE> informs me that the product has all ready been activated. I know that because I insalled  and activated it several years ago.

I have no intention of doing an R&R on this software since I long ago lost the installation disk. This is an older PC that is not really worth updating; however, it works well for me.

This problem is preventing any updates for Office from being installed and is an annoyance anyway since it always complains when started.

If I cannot get this fixed, I will just stop using MS Office and install a FOSS office version instead.

This is the information I capured using the validation checker tool recommended in this forum.

  • Hello Gerard Seibert,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0

    Office Diagnostics: 77F760FE-153-80070002_7E90FEE8-175-80070002_025D1FF3-230-1_3E121E02-385-80004005_3E121E02-452-80004005_3E121E02-312-80004005

Your OEM installation of Office XP Small Business is reporting as not activated.

It's not uncommon to encounter what you are experiencing with your installation of Office XP, where the installation is having an "identity crisis" about whether it is activated or not.

Most people tell us that running the MS FixIt tool in Method 2 of this MS KB article takes care of the problem:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275

However, in your case since you tell us that you have lost the discs (and the product key is on a Certificate of Authenticity that is affixed to the disc envelope, so you may have lost that as well), it would be a wise precaution to run a keyfinding utility (such as the Magical Jellybean Key Finder) and record your product key before you run the FixIt, just in case you have to re-input the product key into the activation wizard.

Please post back to let us know if it worked for you :-)
