Windows 7 Home Premium suddenly reporting not genuine RRS feed

  • Windows 7 Home Premium (purchased online from Microsoft Store) is suddenly reporting not genuine.  Attempts to reactivate failing - product key is blocked.

  • It seems Microsoft is having a problem with their servers. Looks like it involves downloads from the Microsoft store and Digital River.

    Users are reporting this:

    Call: 866-530-6364

     

    Explain you're getting the No Longer Genuine message. Rep reported that it seems a lot of keys have been blocked due to them being refunded on MS's side, but not on the user's side. He issued me a new key (he cannot email it or update your account) and I retried the activation and it worked.

  • They were able to give me a new Product Key - called 866-530-6364.

    Technical support unable to explain what happened that suddenly required me to spend 4-5 hours on a problem of Microsofts's making. 

    They tried the "maybe you have a virus" line.  I mentioned that it would be a pretty powerful virus on my machine that could attack their servers and block perfectly valid Product Keys.  I suggested that it was more likely that an operational problem within Microsoft had incorrectly blocked the Product Key.  That explanation was rejected -- it appears to be the Microsoft position that viruses have compromised the Microsoft servers that hold Windows 7 Product Keys.

  • Thank you for providing us with a number to call to resolve issues relating to copies of Windows 7 sold by Microsoft online.  Keep in mind that many posters here do not live in the USA or Canada, so they cannot use the number.

    Don't get too zealous.  It is obvious from your text that you do not know much about the activation technology.  A virus could easily wreck your licensing store,  etc.  Stick to what you know. 

    Before you advise users to call the number, make sure that it is appropriate for thier problem.  You need to read some of the other threads in this forum.  A lot of them concern counterfeit licenses and pirated software.  The advice to those users to call the number would be very unhelpful.

    Once again, thank you for your contribution.  It is very valuable!

  • I just wanted to update this thread.

    There appears to have been an issue with the Product key Activation/Validation servers that only effected a subset of Digitally Distributed Product keys.

    This issue has been corrected and user that were affected by this should no longer be seeing a Non-Genuine/Key Blocked error.

    If you do still see this error please try the following:

    1) Reboot and then re-try Activating and/or Validating.

    2) If you still see the issue, please contact Microsoft Assisted Support (at one of the below URLs)
