Path Drive Letter Changes

  I have two external drives on win8. I used to back up to b. I spent a great deal of time (days) deleting the pairs and creating new pairs to my new drive "S". then I ran preview and all the references to "S" reverted back to "B" though sync toy can change my drive letter assignment, I cant. Is this to protect back up software businesses or what? and why did it revert. And "S" was not disconnected.
