After SP 2 Update I get a Not Genuine message RRS feed

  • After installing the recommended SP2 update I get a message indicating that the license is not genuine. I purchased Vista from New Egg and have been successfully updating for nearly 2 years without a problem. After the update reboot, I get a dialog asking me to activate windows. This was already done when I first installed Vista.

    It then tells me that I have to re-install windows and I might be a victim of software counterfeit. Well needless to say I am really frustrated and see no reason to re-install Vista. I would rather wait for Windows 7 (good job on the beta so far).

  • Hello Chuckmach,

    I believe your Vista's Licensing Store may have been damaged or corrupted at some point. I would like you to try the below set of steps.  The first set will attempt to reset the Store and the second set will recreate it.  Try the first set and if that doesn't work, move on to the next.

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
    3) Find the file cmd.exe
    4) Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    6) Hit the Enter key
    7) Reboot twice

    1) Return to the cmd windows 
    2) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    3) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    4) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    5) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    6) Type: net start slsvc
    7) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    8) Reboot Twice
    9) You may be required to re-enter the Product Key from the COA sticker (located on the side of bottom of the computer) and then Activate (use the Activate by Phone method)

  • After applying your instructions, and re-entering my key, it appears to be working properly.
    I now get a genuine when running the diagnostic tool.
