What right does Microsoft have to take all this information? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Well Microsoft, what right do you think you have to take all this information?

  • Windows product key
  • PC manufacturer
  • Operating System version
  • Windows XP product ID
  • PC BIOS information (make, version, date)
  • BIOS MD5 Checksum
  • User locale setting
  • Language version of the operating system
  • Office product key (if validating Office)
  • Hard drive serial number
  • Validation and installation results
  • IP address
  • Why do you need to know what make and model my computer is?

Why do you need to know my Hard Disk Serial Number?

Why do you need to know my IP address?

As far as we are conserned WGA is nothing more then glorified SPYWARE.

We are consulting solicitors who are investigating if you are breaking UK and EU law under the computer misuse act.

Information about Product Activation (a program made way way ago, and has gone through legal litigation worldwide), can be found here (www.howtotell.com).

  • Does this mean WGA tool hasn’t gone through legal litigation?

Product activation FAQ says: “the hardware hash used during activation is a combination of hash values of various PC components and cannot be used to determine the make or model of the PC, nor can it be backward-calculated to determine the raw PC information.”

So, as I understand, product activation doesn’t collect PC manufacturer and hard drive serial number.

Didn’t find anything about collecting user’s IP address either...
