Client PC restore FAIL (64-bit) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Had the unfortunate pleasure of restoring a Windows 7 64-bit laptop today. The whole experience was totally flawed.

Will Microsoft ever release a 64-bit client restore CD?

You should suggest it on Connect (or, better yet, vote for it on this one).

  • Thanks, did just that.

More and more people are using 64-bit and at the same time new hardware is coming all the time so will more and more people experience their windows home server failing them in their hour of need. They should release a downloadable ISO for a 64-bit restore CD asap. Can't be that difficult...

I would judge the answer to that to be "no". The Restore CD is based on the 32 bit Windows Vista version of of the "Windows Preinstallation Environment", also known as WinPE 2.0. This version can't load 64 bit device drivers. Microsoft would have to create a second, 64 bit, Restore CD, with all the associated testing, adaptation of code, etc. and I honestly don't think they will invest the resources required.

For more information about Vista Windows PE in general, see this Technet documentation .

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
