Live Mesh Performance On Netbook RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently switched from using a high-end laptop to a combination desktop/net-book (in and out of the office).  The key for making this work was a sharing/synchronization tool like Live Mesh.  My experience on the desktop has been super.  I love the program and it works very well.  I am having major performance problems on the net-book however.  CPU Usage spikes to 100% frequently; particularly during the time after I "wake up" the machine.  This is a Dell Inspiron 11z with a Celeron chip (and 2GB of RAM) so it's not like I'm running on the weakest of computers.  The spiking can happen when I just have a browser running.  The LM processes seem to be the ones slowing down performance.  I replaced Symantec Endpoint Protection with MS Security Essentials hoping that would make a difference (but it hasn't).  I am considering purchasing a replacement net-book with a faster processor, but I'm not convinced that will do it either.  I expect that if this machine was running continually I would have less of a problem.  But it's the nature of laptops/net-books to open/close on a regular basis.  I do this all the time when I'm away from my office.  I've read many of the other threads on performance but I wasn't certain if they applied to this version of LM; or an earlier one. Is there any solution to LM dominating CPU performance on "waking up"; or do I need to find another program?

  • dofnm, I don't know if it will work for you, but I had a similar problem on a eeepc 901, 2 MB and flashdrives.

I disabled live mesh remote desktop and that did the trick. I sync a lot of folders and MBs.

  • What kind of sync are you doing? Live Mesh is probably checking for changes and communicating that back to the cloud. How many folders/files are being synchronized?

Perhaps you'd be able to be served by Live Sync - http://sync.live.com - no cloud copy of the files, but it does allow sync on demand or automatic for each folder you set up. And, rumor has it that Live Sync and Live Mesh will soon become one - how that will affect you, I don't know.

  • I am syncing two folders with about 30MB of data and 175 files.  I am not sure what you mean "what type of sync." My only options in settings are "when files are edited or modified" or "never with this device."  The other choices are greyed out.

In regards to Live Sync, are you saying the performance of that program is better than Live Mesh?  Are there any ways to tweak LM so it doesn't demand so much CPU?  Or is this just standard behavior?

  • I meant - are you synchronizing with the Live Desktop as well as other computers or just with other computers - P2P? Sorry that I wasn't clear.

30 MB and 175 files is a fairly small amount of data. Your preformance should *not* be impacted at all. Unfortunately, though, it appears tha tyou are being impacted. What security software are you using? I wonder if it and Mesh are in some sort of battle at startup.

No, I'm not saying Live Sync is better from a performance standpoint. It is, however, a released product, while Live Mesh is a beta. Since we don't know what's causing your issue with Live Mesh on that PC, it was simply an idea to see if Live Sync performs better for you.

  • Thanks for the response.

I am synchronizing to Live Desktop; and between the two machines.  See my initial post above for the security software issue.  That was my initial thought.  I haven't seen any difference with MSSE vs SEP.  I may give LS a try; or just reinstall LM and see if it makes a difference.  Thanks again for your help.
