How to solve the "not genuine" Vista Home Premium issue? RRS feed

  • Hi,

    I have started up my pc today and apparently have a similar problem to alot of the other people on here (see the diagnostics below). I have had this version of windows since i bought this dell pc, the code i have tried entering is stuck to the back of my machine, and doesnt activate windows for some reason.

    I was hoping someone could help me to resolve.

    (Note. I would ring up, but on the automatic telephone line it asks for a activation code, which i havent got (or am not given on the activation page)).

  • I cant even remember when i installed the OS last, it must have been quite a while ago, years probably.

    I have had AVG in the past, but havent really had anything for a number of months inbetween installs to be fair.

    I guess overdue for a reformat then doh. Is that your best recommendation before i proceed?

  • I really do think that it's probably your best option.

    In the modern world, running a system without an Anti-virus installed and running amounts almost to criminal negligence, as it's likely that your system will be infected and functioning as part of a botnet within days - potentially infecting thousands of others.

    Removing such infections once they have a hold varies anywhere from being reasonably easy with care, to being extremely difficult without specialist tools and assistance.

  • Your system doesn't appear to be running properly - possibly due to the effects of malware or registry cleaners (or overly agressive Anti-Virus)

    The report is not being fully generated, because the script on which it partly depends is either not finding any data, or has other problems.

    Please start with some system checks....

    Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

     

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     

    At the Command prompt, type

     

    CHKDSK C: /R

     

    and hit the Enter key.

    You will be told that the drive is locked,

    and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

     

    The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

     

    After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

     

    SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     

    At the Command prompt, type

     

    SFC /SCANNOW

     

    and hit the Enter key

     

    Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

     

     

    Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

     

    Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • SFC seems to have fisxed one file - but it's not enough.

    Please run teh CheckSUR tool and see if it finds more, and/or fixes this one.

    Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

    (you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

     

    Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

    The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

     

    Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your public SkyDrive so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

  • That didn't find anything amiss either.

    The SFC report was doing a lot of work - it's possible that either it or I missed something - please run it again, and post a new report.

    There have been a number of these exact types of problem lately - I'd like to get to the bottom of it. (so far the only soution has been a repair install)

  • What Anti-Virus are you using? - what other AV's have ever been installed on this machine

    The licensing manager VBS script is not running properly - and such scripts are often either the target or source of malware attacks. SFC doesn't appear to be complaining about it, but scripting does get rather a lot of mentions in the report.

    Have you at some point either repair installed the OS, or reinstalled Internet Explorer?

  • Hi,

    I installed AVG free version a couple of weeks ago, its the only anti virus that has been on here. If you want i can disable it for now?

    I use firefox as my browser, and thats all thats been on here. I havent reinstalled the interenet explorer at all to be honest.

  • You say you installed AVG only a couple of weeks ago - how long ago did you install the OS and first connect it to the internet?
    What security were you using between times? Note that if the answer is 'none', there's a very good chance that your machine has been infected by malware, and it would probably be best to reformat and reinstall.
