Can my homeserver.com domain name expire with after uninstalling WHS? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying out the trial version of WHS.

I registered a domain name with homeserver.com (such as joesmith.homeserver.com) that is tied to my Live account. Everything is working for the moment, including remote access using this domain name.

I have some questions about keeping this domain name:

    1. Is this domain name tied "forever" to my live account? Will it expire after a period if I do not use my Live account for anything else (including email)?
    2. If I uninstall WHS (because I want to wait a bit longer), will my "domain" name at homeserver.com still tied to my Live account so I can reactivate it later on for my use? Will the domain name ever be returned to the pool so other users can "steal" away my name?
    3. If I let the evaluation period expire (either 30 days or 120 days), will the domain name at homeserver.com still tied to my Live account or will it be returned to the pool again so other users can "steal" away my name after the trial period expires?
    4. If I purchase a license of WHS later on beyond the evaluation period and activate it using my newly purchased license key (not an evaluation key), will I retain the domain name I had signed up initially at homeserver.com?
    5. Can I own MORE THAN ONE domain name at homeserver.com with EACH license of WHS? That is, if I create 2 Live accounts and tie each account to one domain name, can you switch the domain name by switching the Live account currently in use with WHS?

  • 1) As far as I know, yes. I haven't seen any indication of expiration
    2) Yes, I transferred my WHS to a new box and the custom domain moved with my Live account
    3) It should not expire, still should be tied to your Live account
    4) Yes, it is retained on your Live account
    5) Yes, you will need two Live accounts for two custom domains. And yes, I think if you login with the different Live account, it will change that custom domain you are currently using.

  • Thanks for the help, mate.

Has the domain name hording been a problem for WHS? I can imagine that, much like email address, someone is registering massive lists of domain names to prevent someone else from having them. For me, I have to come up with several "imaginative" names before I can find one that is open.

I know email addresses get recycled by Microsoft. Has there been any information about recycling previously registered domain names?

  • Hi,
xyz.homeserver.com as 3rd level domain is still not that popular, that "hording" would make any sense.
As far as I know, there has been no information about domain name recycling. Besides that, I don't think, that Live IDs expire as hotmail accounts did.
So my imagination is: as long as the live ID of a user exists, the homeserver.com domain will be preserved unless the user registered another one on the same ID.

  • Is there a difference between so-called Live ID vs. Hotmail, aside from the difference of @live.com vs. @hotmail.com? Both can be used to sign in, so I suppose both can be used to link to a homeserver.com domain. Am I correct?

What about other Live accounts, such as @windowslive.com , @live.co.uk (or other country specific TLD). Does the same rule apply?
