Contact the company that made your laptop and tell them about you having
to replace the hard drive. They can then provide you with some CD to
install WIndows again, usually for a small fee to cover postage and
    handling.

  • Hello 3eyesopen,

The advice offered by rasmith59 is good advice. :-)

If your laptop manufacturer no longer supplies recovery/reinstallation discs for your computer, you can try third party sites such as www.restoredisks.com to see if they have a stock.

There is a third alternative, so if the above two do not pan out for you, post back to learn about the third choice.

  • Hello mattttthynnnn,

When trying to install XP on a major manufacturer computer when you do not have a recovery partition or do not have recovery discs...

Use a genuine hologrammed Microsoft systembuilder/OEM/small manufacturer installation CD for the edition of XP you need to install.  (This CD has "For distribution with a new PC only.  For product support, contact the manufacturer of the PC" engraved in the upper left quadrant of the hologram.  This does not work with other XP installation CDs, such as Volume and Retail.)  Enter the product key on the laptop's CoA, do NOT use the product key that came with the disc.  After installation is complete and it's time to activate, do a telephonic activation rather than the automatic online activation.
