OEM key is invalid? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Recently one of our PCs starting demanding to be activated. It's an IBM PC with a COA sticker on it. When I run the activation wizard it tells me that the product key is invalid, but it matches the one on the sticker so how can this be?

The report follows. The product key listed in the report is the one on the sticker.

  • Hello shteve,

I have checked the Poduct ID and this Product Key is good. I suggest Activating the computer using the "Activate by Phone" method. The Activation Rep should be able to issue an override to get the computer activated.

How to activate Windows XP by phone
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click 'Start', point to 'All Programs', point to 'Accessories', point to 'System Tools', and then click 'Activate Windows'.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area (aka system Tray).
    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
    3. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.
    4. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
"You have successfully activated your copy of Windows".

    Thank you,
