Virus attacked Windows Home Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • A virus attacked one of the home laptops, and then figured out the OS was being backed up by WHS. It deleted all of the backups for that PC, but didin't appear to damage anything else. For example, the personal media folders and backups for other PC's appear fine. How do I recover the backup images back so I can restore this laptop?

  • Hmm. Do have any details on the virus? Never heard of this one before.

Unless you have backed up the backup database (manually or using an Add-in such as WHS BDBB) it's unlikely you will be able to recover the backup database.

There's a very small chance you can restore using previous verions. Basic instructions in this thread, where it reads \DE\shares\somefolder you should replace with the DE\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}. Please note backup database may be spread over different disks. ONLY do this if you really understand what you're doing, otherwise accept your loss and reinstal the laptop. Also please note you risk messing up your server if you make any mistake there.
