Invalid License Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just started to get this problem today.  Seems that I am getting a file mismatch error for SLsvc.exe.  I looked at the file in Sys32 and it shows that it has not been modified since  Saturday, ‎January ‎19, ‎2008, ‏‎2:33:22 AM,   Created on Wednesday, ‎July ‎02, ‎2008, ‏‎2:53:48 PM and Accessed Today, ‎August ‎20, ‎2008, ‏‎46 minutes ago.  There are no previous versions listed.  The problem appeared when I went to open Control Panel. When I would try to open it, I would get a flash on the screen but Control Panel would not open.

I do have a Windows Home Server on my network that this machine backs up to every night, so restoring will not be a problem.  The main thing is why is this happening?

  • Hi brianmcp,

I can't give you a exact anwser to your question because there are a number of possible causes for a file to show Mismatch. I can, however, explain what is happening.

In Vista there are a number of System files that Vista keeps an eye on. It will periodically look at the Signature Hash of a file and then compare it to the Signature Hash that is recorded in the System Catalog. If the Hashs don't match the Vista assumes the file is being tampered in an attempt to bypass Activation and/or Validation and flages itself Non-Genuine.

There are two way for the Mismatch to occure:

    1) The file has been Modified in some way. The possible way for a file to be modified are: Manual manipulation, a malicious program changed or replaced the file (i.e Virus), random file corruption or corruption due to a hard drive problem (such as a sector going bad) to name just the causes that I can think of off the top of my head.

    2) The recorded Signature Hash, in the system catalog, is incorrect. This is rare, but sometimes a Windows Update can fail, after it has updated the file, but before it can record the file's new Signature Hash in the System Catalog.

Sorry I couldn't tell you why your specific issue occur, there is just no way for me to know.

    Hope my explination helps,
