SharedView Ports

    Question

  •

    Hi,

I am behind a corporate firewall.  I would like to know what are the ports that need to be opened before I can signin and share screen with fellow users.  Thanks.

    Regards,

    Kueh.

  • Chris,

thank you for helping us investigate the problem you are having. I believe we have narrowed down the cause and the way to solve the problem on your side could be done in 3 steps:

    1. configure your firewall to allow the "application/pkix-crl" type - this is a certificate revocation list so you want this allowed anyway for security reasons

    2. check the IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advanced Tab->Security Options->”Check for server certificate revocation" checkbox

    3. restart IE

Let us know if you are having further problems with MS SharedView and thank you for using our Beta!

  • Hi Kueh,

You should be able to run SharedView without having to open any ports or change firewall settings.  Try it out, and come back to the forums if you hit some error.

  • I am also behind a firewall.

    Only limited use/testing so far.

But SharedView has worked OK and I did not ask for any changes in the firewall.

  • Hi Mehal,

I should be more specific.  I am behind a corporate firewall and wants to know what port I need the admin to open before shareview can signin.  I tried to login using windows live account and was not able to login.  FYI, I am also not able to use MSN messager behind the corporate firewall.  Thanks.

    Regards,

    Kueh.

  • I'd like to make sure this is actually a firewall issue and not a SharedView issue.  Can you join an existing session as a guest user?  If you don't know anyone else using SharedView, feel free to contact me.

  • I am also getting the same problem. It keeps telling me "Unable to contact the SharedView service. Please try again later".

I'm assuming this is due to my firewall blocking either a port, or a MIME type.

    Any suggestions?

  • Hello Chris,

Could you please post your SharedView log file?  You can find it by going to Start > Run > "%temp%" (without quotes).  The file name should be like sharedview-debug20.txt.  Thanks.

    Hi,

I would like one clarification here.  My corporate firewall has only HTTP and HTTPS ports opened only for outbound.  Will I be able to login to to start a session and then subsequently able to share application with an participant outside the firewall?.  The reason is that I want to minimize or eliminate the amount of troubleshooting I that have to do to get it to work.  If possible, I want to know the inbound and outbound ports that needs to be opened on the firewall to get everything working.  Hope you can help.  Thanks.

    Regards,

    Kueh.

  • Hello Kueh,

Please see post http://forums.microsoft.com/SharedViewBeta/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1590071&SiteID=59 by Cameron.  You should not need to alter your firewall settings for SharedView to work.  Please try using SharedView and please share the results.  Thank you.

  • Hello Chris,

It appears that your client is unable to fetch the config file.  Do you have a working Internet connection?  If your pc is within a network that uses a proxy server you could try ensuring that your IE proxy setting has autodetect enabled.  This can be found in IE at Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings.  Please let us know the result.  Thank you.

  • Kristian,

I bet it's our Firebox x1000 ... it has a MIME blocker, and it will file types that we don't allow. What extension is the Config File? Is it a TXT file? If so, we generally blocked those.

If you can advise what file type the config file is, I can unblock it on our firewall and then it should work just fine!

    Thanks!

  • Hi Chris,

The name of the file is client-config.txt.  Thanks.

    Thursday, May 17, 2007 9:22 PM
  • Yes that is why it's not working ... our firewall blocks the .TXT file extension. I will see if I can get it unblocked, and then try it further.

    Thanks!

  • OK Looks like I was wrong... I CAN access the Config file if I open it in a web browser. Here is what I see...

but I'm still receiving the following error from SharedView: "Unable to contact the SharedView service. Please try again later"

  • Hi Chris,

Could you please provide a little more information?  What is your default web browser and which version of Windows are you using?  Is there anything else unique about your network that you could tell us?  Thanks.

    Friday, May 18, 2007 2:41 PM
  • Kristian,

I have Firefox as my default web browser. I did try switching the default over to Internet Explorer 7.0 to see if it made a difference, and it didn't (I didn't try restarting after changing default browsers though).

I'm using Vista Business... and anything about the network... umm.. we're running Windows Server 2003 in Native Mode on all our boxes, and we have a Watchguard Firebox x1000 as our Firewall (which is what blocks file types as well).

Nothing too strange here! Let me know your thoughts.

  • Hi Chris,

    Try doing this:

    1)  Go to the config file in your browser

    2)  Run regedit, and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\SharedView\Connection

    3)  Copy/paste the contents of the config file in the "LastClientConfig" key

  • I tried what you said, and it worked! I was able get get a little further.... BUT still no luck yet!!

Here is what I see now:

    http://images.keeklamp.com/SharedViewError.jpg

    What can I do now?

  • Hi Chris,

Would you be willing to temporarily switch your default browser to IE, ensure the proxy setting is set to auto-detect (Tool > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings), and the restart SharedView (exit, and relaunch)?  Thanks.

    Friday, May 18, 2007 7:37 PM
  • Yep did that. I also restarted the computer 2 times to be sure. Still not working...

I'm getting the same error as I had before -- see the image I linked above.

And then, I'm getting this error on the log in the Temp folder:

  • Hi Chris,

Can you please try signing in to your Passport/LiveID account using a different mechanism than SharedView?  Thanks.

    Friday, May 18, 2007 8:58 PM
  • Yep, and it works fine. I just was downloading Office Communicator 2007 Beta, and I had to sign in to get it. Worked fine, and was able to download the files.

I also tried an alternate Windows Live ID as well to make sure it wasn't just my login.

  • Chris,

thank you for your patience while we investigate the issue you are having.

Can you please try the following couple of steps and let me know what the result is?

Please include the information from the tab as well as the Global Root information that you get from the Security Report.

    thanks

    Maria

  • I did what you mentioned, and here is what I see:

    http://images.keeklamp.com/cert_root.jpg

Is this the information you needed?

Also I noticed on the first "General" tab I had the option to "Install Certificate" -- should I try this as well?

    Thanks!

  • Yes, please click on "Install Certificate" and after it is done, restart SharedView and your browser and let us know if you can start a session.

    Thanks for using MS SharedView!

  • I did this, and still no luck yet. Still telling me the following:

    http://images.keeklamp.com/SharedViewError.jpg

There must be some other file types that my firewall is blocking. IS there anyway you can tell me all of the file types that are accessed when it tries to connect with the SharedView server? So far we know that .TXT is accessed (which was blocked, and now is unblocked). So it would be helpful to know if there are any other file types being pulled down during the connection process. That way I can see about unblocking them, and testing this again.

  • Hi Chris,

      Could you try this?

       1. Uncheck the following item from your IE.

          IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advanced Tab->Security Options->”Check for server certificate revocation"

       2. Restart IE to make it take effect.

      Thanks

    Hao

  • That did it! It works!

I tested it also by turning that item back ON again, then it wouldn't connect. Then I turned it back off, and it connected perfectly!

Why would such a setting cause all this trouble? I wish I understood the reason a bit more Smile

Either way, thanks for working through this with me!

  • Great! In an effort to find out exactly what is causing this, can you please try to download the following 2 files without making any changes to your firewall or IE settings and let us know if they are being blocked?

    The list is:

Let us know if you are able to download both of these files to your machine.

Thank you for using MS SharedView.

  • I can download the first link (cdp.crl) without problem, but my firewall blocks the second link (mswww(3).crl).

    Is that good or bad?

  • Do you receive any type of error when you try to download the secong file? Do you know if there is a reson that your firewall might be blocking this particular one?

    thanks

    Maria

  • Yes, it's because we have the extension blocked. This is the error it throws:

WatchGuard firewall: Response denied from http://131.107.115.28:80/pki/mscorp/crl/mswww(3).crl: Unsafe content type "application/pkix-crl"

We have a Watchguard Firebox x1000, and we block all extensions by default, unless we allow it through.

  • Chris,

thank you for helping us investigate the problem you are having. I believe we have narrowed down the cause and the way to solve the problem on your side could be done in 3 steps:

    1. configure your firewall to allow the "application/pkix-crl" type - this is a certificate revocation list so you want this allowed anyway for security reasons

    2. check the IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advanced Tab->Security Options->”Check for server certificate revocation" checkbox

    3. restart IE

Let us know if you are having further problems with MS SharedView and thank you for using our Beta!

  • I encountered the same problem. I am using Vista, I've just installed SharedView on my computer. Unfortunately, I tried to use it many times, it insisted telling me that "Unable to contact the SharedView service...". I even turned off the Windows Firewall and tried all above posts. However, no luck!

    Please help!

  • Hello, did you install the Beta 1 build (2971.1)?  If so, please try installing the Beta 2 build from http://get.live.com/betas/sharedview_betas  There is a known issue with trying to connect with the Beta 1 build if you have never signed in before.

    Thanks,

    David
