    Hi,

I am actually hoping Darrin Smith picks up on this cause he really seems to know his stuff!

My question does not relate to Vista as such but more to a general problem on all versions of the OS. And that is the following:

Now I know you are going to say first off... "This is not a Microsoft issue but a gamespy one"... I agree.. It has gamespy written all over it, however surely MS agreed on certain TOS and SLA/OLA's??? How could they possibly allow this to continue. I really wish I could log this as a support call, however when I go to the support section of the MS site I am asked to provide my PID.... guess what... enter the PID and it comes up as Zoo tycoon... so basically I am being stonewalled at every single turn with this. Ask gamespy and they say this is not a problem either. I have spoken with many many people and every single one of them has this... at times it takes up to 20 - 30 attempts at logging in. The problem is also not the speed of my broadband or ports, the correct ports are open as per MSKB and I am on a 20 cable broadband.

All I want is at least some kind of acknowlegement of this problem or at least someone to talk to?! It's such a shame that the most incredible game (flagship one at that) is crippled by such a trivial issue. Either gamespy need to add more resource or MS need to take hosting back.

Any help at all or even feedback would be so so appreciated.

    Thanks
    DW747 (

  • Hey DW747,

Thanks for the complement, I appreciate it .

Unfortunately, I don't play FSX or use Gamespy (I'm more of a MMO and First Person Shooter type of guy). Plus I'm supposed to be supporting Vista Validation and Activation issues, in this forum. But since you buttered me up, I did do alittle research and this does seem to be a fairly common issue experienced by other Flight Simulator X players.

The only workarounds I found (that have been known to have worked for some players) are:

    1) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070803095121AAPBW2d The user says: "Start clicking on a part of fsx where there are no buttons AT THE SAME TIME THE "CONNECTING TO GAMESPY" Window appears. Keep on doing that and then you'll be logging in "normally"."

    2) http://forums.gamespy.com/simulation_games/b50687/19713106/p1/?6 The user says "when you get kicked from gamespy is go to www.gamespy.com loging on the web restart your FSX and login and it shud work but it doesnt always work."

He also says suggests "using FShost www.chocolatesoftware.com/fshost/ where you will find all the servers thats up and running the only thing is that you will need to use Teamspeak or Ventrilo for voice coms."

You may want to read the full post as the user seems to be working with Microsoft to maybe help resolve the issue.

Lastly, if you try to contact Microsoft support again, don't worry that your PID comes up as Zoo Tycoon, just continue with the support. I believe all games are supported by the same group and even if it's not and you get sent to the zoo tycoon support group, the Rep should transfer you over to the group that does supports FSX.

Anyways, I'm sorry I couldn't be more help, but this is way outside my area of knowledge and even though I work at Microsoft, it's so big, that you (as a customer) would probably have a better chance of talking to the right people, then I would .

Hi, thanks so much for getting back to me even though this is not the "correct channel"...

I was right about you... that thing you sent with the Yahoo answers as absolutely crazy as it sounds and appears initial tests have all proven positive! Its amazing there is no explanation of how it should work but it does. I tried logging in at a notoriously difficult time and got in first time everytime!? Genius!

I take back what I said to everyone else MS must buy Yahoo now!

Again I really appreciate the time you took to look into this. I'm a IT bod myself and know what its like when things get escalated in the wrong directions!  I will spread the word on the fix!

    All the best!

DW747 - happy to be flying first time every time!

  • I have FSX and I am able to play a whole section till it closes, try using wireless the least possible, it should help you out a little.

as ... for the logging problem, it is quite common, it is all GameSpy's problem but they do not want to acknowledge it.

  • I'm a new gamespy user and was having serious problems connecting after a few initial connections. I read somewhere, not here, about going to gamespy.com and doing the login bit, so I logged into gamespy.com and was looking around the site and checked out my account. It wasn't filled out, filled it out and it said my email wasn't verified so went thru that process and got my email verified, and most importantly I think, on the right side of your account page is an area where you can optionally enter you address etc.. I only entered my gender and state, but here I think may be the important part. At the top of that section is a place where you can enter your connection speed, ie; modem and its speed,  ISDN, DSL, Cable, and so-on. I entered DSL as I'm on Verizon FIOS and now after all of this process I'm having almost no problem logging into Gamespy on FSX. Hope this helps.

3/16/2010....Here's another thing I did which seems to have helped the problem even more. On another blog about this problem a guy suggested that you bring up the network settings page, (the network button at the bottom of the initial gamespy sign in page), and change the port range to 29900-29901. I tried that and I don't think I've had any problems since, mine is still set to that.

Unfortunately there is a downside to Gamespy, you might have been successful getting in for months, but then suddenly you might come up with a message saying ‘You may have logged into another computer’

But then I found out that I lost connection with Gamespy completely.

What you should do to solve this problem and what I did is Port forward port number: 8871 – Gamespy

    http://portforward.com/

I successful done that and now it is working perfectly.

I do recommend this to anyone that is having the problem I had.

I have NO IDEA, WTH you're talking about - but it appears to be nothing to do  with Activation or Validation problems with Windows - please try the forums for eh misbehaving programs, which may be of more use to you.

  • Noel,

The trick detailed by DW747 (originally offered by Lord Waffles at the above link) does work. I found that it doesn't give you a 100% certainty, but it surely provides a far better chance of getting on with the software set up as it is.....

Simply pick anyplace on the multiplayer logon window (with your cursor) that does not have a control function. I usually use the space between the lobby contacts and the UI (user interface) just below the settings button. I don't think anyone fully understands why clicking on a non-UI increases the odds, but for some reason it does.... maybe clicking during the handshake may be modifying the way the packets are getting to GS?

You may not have noticed, but my response is dated over 6 months ago! - and the thread itself had effectively died three months before that.
