Opening up ports on Windows Home Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've just started running Windows Home Server and have  a question regarding ports.  I would like to keep remote access to my Home Server, but I would like to use a different port than Port 80.  I have a web site and a few services running in IIS on a Windows XP machine.  I would like reserve port 80 to this machine (so port forwarding set to it's IP).  I would then like to open another port to my home server.

  • You could address another port (i.e. http://servername.homeserver.com:8080) and forward this in your router to port 80 on your home server - or you directly use the server with https prefix, which circumvents port 80 and goes to port 443 instead.

A 3rd option would be to alter the port in IIS directly, but this is the least recommended method.
