Does a backup depend on previous backups ?

Question
-
Added a new PC to my 'Fleet' recently, and it took me a couple of tries to get the backup running correctly (Win7 - 64bit), but I figured it out (with help from this forum) and they have been running no problem.
However, in my attempt to get the routine figured out, I had 2 failed backups, and one that was described (by WHS) as partial. My question is - were/are the subsequent backups dependant the previous backup (much like an incremental backup) ? If so - is it possible that WHS believes it can look back to historical backups to get some of the data it needs to do a restore, only to find out the backup it was depending on is no good ?
If the above truely is a problem, can I fix it by deleting ALL of the old back-ups, and doing a manual backup. Would WHS consider that a 'clean-slate', and do a complete backup as if the PC had never been backed up before ?
Thanks,

You can safely delete any backup you like. Doing so won't affect any other backups for that, or any other, computer backed up to your server.
For more information about what backup is doing, and how, you might want to check out the Home Computer Backup and Restore technical brief. You may also want to look over the entire Windows Home Server microsite (especially the Help page), as there is a great deal of information about the product there.

Hi Rich,
backup stores data based on clusters in the backup database.
If you have the same data in several clusters on the PCs, only one copy of such a cluster is stored in the backup database.
Subsequent backups only check, if the clusters still match and copy only, if changes happen.
If you remove the failed backups in the console, this will have no impact on the integrity of the overall backup database, you should still be able to open or restore all other backups. (The automatic database cleanup, which happens each Sunday, does nothing else.)
Best greetings from Germany
