ACTIVATION/VALIDATION ISSUE RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had to do a restore from my recovery disks.  It is now requiring me to activate windows but my Start no longer has the activation wizard included.  Following is the report from the validation tool.  The product key it is showing does not match the certification sticker on my machine.  The machine was purchased from WalMart and is an e-machine.

    What do I do?

  • Hi Helen601

The reason, your Windows says "not activated" is most likely due to a windows license data file C:\windows\system32\WPA.DBL is ready only on your computer.  Please make sure this file is writable.

    1. Goto your windows system directory (for example C:\windows\system32)

    2. Look for a file WPA.DBL

    3.  Right mouse click on the file name then in the pop-up menu, select "Properties" and then un-check "Ready only" checkbox and hit "Apply" button.

    4. Then visit URL http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate.aspx to validate your system again.

Please let us know if it works for you.

    Thanks,
    Satish

If you cannot successfully activate via the internet, then choose the alternative option to "activate by phone". The Activation Wizard displays the toll free number that you can dial. You can open the Windows Product Activation wizard by clicking Start, then Run, and type in "oobe/msoobe /a", then press the Enter key located on your keyboard.

  • I tried running your solution before posting.  It says it cannot find the  file.  Since I no longer have the activation wizard I don't have the phone number and cannot get the number that normally comes up as a key on the activation screen.
