Upgrade from CRM 4.0 to 2011 question... RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are looking to upgrade to CRM 2011 later this year. We have the hosted version of CRM. When we go to "flip the switch" to go to CRM 2011, how is the Outlook client installation pushed to the end users? With they receive a notification with an update message? And when they do the upgrade, will it upgrade their system to CRM 2011? Or, are there additional steps to consider?

    Any help would be appreciated...Thanks!

  • You have to uninstall the Outlook client for CRM 4.0, then you need to install Outlook client for CRM2011.

  • I was hoping this could be automated. Is there a way to push the uninstall/install as a package to the users that would simplify the process?

  • As a further note, this would seem very cumbersome for companies that have a very large amount of licenses. If they have to uninstall and then install the new client, that would be massive headache to manage.

We have approximately 70 users and this becomes a logistical nightmare with just that many. Does anyone have a more simplified method?

  • FYI - there has been a big improvement made with the backward compatibility with CRM 2011 and the 4.0 client for Outlook.

Your current users with CRM 4 for Outlook will continue to be fully functional with your CRM 2011 server deployment.  It's not like headaches experienced with the 3.0 to 4.0 upgrade.  This way you can upgrade the client machines at your own pace.  The only thing missing will be the new 2011 functionality like the new CRM window pane, ability to attach sales literature to an outlook email, CRM auto creating new contacts from unresolved email addresses, etc...

But uninstall/reinstall will be necessary.  And the new install of the 2011 client is more time consuming as well than the 4.0 client.  Just as simple but takes more time.  Now is a good time to upgrade hardware as well.  2GB ram is minimum and 4GB is recommended.  I have seen the 2011 client run on machines with 1GB but it is not advised.
