SyncToy 2.1 fails to write to NAS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I was waiting for SyncToy new release to come out since I had the 2.0 NAS time offset problem and jpg corruption.

Well.... it got worst with 2.1 as I cant copy a single file on the target NAS.

    Test: ECHO/SYNCHRONIZE/CONTRIBUTE
    Size: 7.24GB
    Directories: 149
    Files: 1441
Target home directory is empty at start.

All directories get created on the target.
All files fail to copy with this error:

Error: Unknown error: The process cannot access the files because it is being used by another process. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070020) Copying C:\Users........

It does that for every single file from the source pair. And no, the files are NOT opened by another process, at least not ALL of them.

If I change the target from NAS to some other internal drive, everything goes well.

Also, why is that when we clik on 'see error' we end up in a 'preview' windows ? Kind of odd !

Anybody else has the same errors? is it just my NAS that produces these errors ?

    thanks,

    J-F

  • thanks for the info.

with the feedback from a few folks in the forum, issues with NAS likely to be the speicif envrioment issues:
    1. long sync time due to network bandwidth and due to the undesired syncToy sync status/progress reporting, it seems hang
    2. destination doesn't have right permission
    3. anti-virus software or other application ( security apps ? ) holds of file so sync failed.

Please share with us your NAS configuration if you still encounter issues after eliminate the cause of the above problems/issues.

    thanks

  • Hi J-F,

Thank you for trying out SyncToy2.1. To be able to figure out what happened on your NAS drive, I need to clarify something first.

    1) How did you install SyncToy2.1? Did you do an upgrade from 2.0 or actually manually uninstall 2.0 before install 2.1?

    2) Are the files, that you are trying to sychronize using 2.1, the old currupted files or a new set of files that haven't been synced before?

    3) Could you kill all the other processes, and try to sync just 1 single file and let me know how it goes?

Sorry for inconvenience it might cause. With more information, I may be able to have our team to repro it and come out with a viable solution.

    Thanks,
    Nina

  • Hi Nina,

    1) Recently installed Windows 7 64bits over XP. So it is a fresh install. This is the first SyncToy installation in this Windows environment.

    2) These are the Original files on the main system disk. Never got corrupted.

    3) Killed all applications processes. Nothing is running except Windows essential processes. Tested with only one file (new) ..... FAILED. same error.

BTW Process Explorer does not report the file as being opened ! It is clearly with the target being on NAS that creates the problem. I can drag-n-drop the file to NAS with no problem.

    Thanks for your help,

    J-F

  • I haven't tried this yet myself but are you using NFS or SMB or some other type of share and are they mapped to drive letters or are you using UNC paths? edit: oops didn't mean to hit propose answer

  • Hi J-F,

A quick question, for the sync test of one single file, did you create a new folder pair for the sync? If not, would you please create a new folder pair and try syncing again?

Besides, would you please check the log info (which can be found at File | View Log) and send us the log of the last round sync with errors?

    Thanks,
    Nina

  • Just to say I'm seeing the same issue, but files synchronizing back from the NAS to the pc drive work fine.  I have multiple-NAS drives from different vendors all showing the same issue with both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista.

    Thanks for any help possible,
    Simon T.

  • Nina,

To throw my 2cents in, I'm having the same problems with V2.1 and a new NAS drive but if I turn off the Read-Only attribute, the file copies okay. Needless to say, the USB drive has always worked without a glitch.

  • a workaround for linux-based nas´es using fat-fs can likely be richcopy 4.0 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2009.04.utilityspotlight.aspx).

as long as not configuring to many copy-threads, which crashes nas´es linux almost often (but without damaging data on the nas),
and using "purge" as copyoption, should do the sync-job as desired.

  • Yunwen,

    1. all directories get created, but none of the files. Wouldnt sync time affect both ?
    2. again, directories get created. Permission on target is "writable"
    3. anti-virus disabled

None of your suggestions apply to my configuration (except maybe #1 if this would affect file transfer but not directory creation )

  • All,

Flashed my NAS firmware a few minutes ago...

Now SyncToying my music library to my NAS as I write this ;)

Everything seems to work fine now.

Here are some details for those who this might also apply

    NAS:                     MediaSonic HD9-SU2LAH
    Previous firmware: NAS2890-009 LOADER 3.2
New firmware:       NAS2891-014A LOADER 3.2 (firmware release notes -> "Added: Windows 7 compatible")

(NOTE: the updated firmware is NOT from mediasonic, but from one of their competitor using the same chipset)
For those tempted to try this solution, please remember that firmware flashing is at your own risk.

It also solved another problem I had with the NAS, and that I was about to mention here.
I could only map the network drives, not access the root directory through explorer. Now this is also fixed.

    thanks again,

    J-F

  • Hi,

I'm experiencing exactly the same problems with a Freecom Network Drive (NAS).  Can you tell me where you got the NAS2891-014A LOADER 3.2 upgrade from?

I've tried googling, but cannot find a download for it.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

First, make sure your device is using the same chipset (RDC 2891)

Read this, since this is also talking about Freecom.  This is where I found the info to solve my problem.
    http://www.aroundmyroom.com/2008/04/04/landisk-rdc-2891-chipset/

    Download from here:
    ftp://ftp.conceptronic.net/conceptronic/GRABNGO/CHD3NET

forgot to mention that by solving all those problems I lost  UPnP fonctionality from my NAS (Cant see prictures/ play music from my XBox !)

then, let us know if it solve your problem.

  • Hello, I am getting exactly the same problem (error 0x80070020) when trying to "echo" folder on local disk drive to folder located on drive letter which is mapped NAS drive (Netgear ReadyNAS Duo in my case). No problems when syncing between folders on local drives. Fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with SyncToy 2.1 x64. Even though syncing fails, trying to rerun Preview afterwards sometimes returns result as if all files were copied but in other cases it finds some differences. In other words copying to NAS is quite unstable. Zbyniu

  • Very hard to find what chipset I have.  Doesn't show it on the web front end.  After some googling it seems that it is that chipset, so I bit the bullet and upgraded my firmware.

I can now windows explorer browse to the root of the drive and SyncToy seems to be working fine in echo mode.  Some files have failed, but I'm assuming it is due to some applications being opened.

Thanks for the prompt response.  Shame that Freecom don't publish the most up to date firmware upgrades.

    Cheers

  • Hello, first of all thanks for your support. I have a NAS with the following Firmware Version NAS2890-008 LOADER 3.2  , but I can't know what kind of chipset has the NAS. I have problems with Windows 7. Is there any firmware upgrade that I can apply ?

Unfortunatelly I do not see the NAS manufacturer or any other info...

Thanks in advance for your support.
