  • If you are referring to this post - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3639359&SiteID=2 - you did get a reply.

OneCare requires that your PC have all of the available critical and important security updates. For XP, this now includes SP3.

Your problem is that SP3 is failing to install. At the link that Jim provided you will find information on how to obtain *free* help with SP3 installation. It isn't a OneCare problem, so you are technically off topic for this forum.

What kind of help were you looking for, and what's wrong with the reply and referral you got here from another user less than two hours after you originally asked for help?  It seemed an appropriate response to me:

    https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

The problem is that you haven't installed Service Pack 3, and OneCare is only advising you that you're backlevel.

Are you using Windows Live OneCare?

For help with Windows Update -

If you are using OneCare, since OneCare requires the critical/important updates to be installed, you can also contact OneCare support for help:

  • This software and SP3 might be fine for some of you guru's who does nothing but set around and fool with your computer, but what about the rest of us who didn't ask for all these stupid problems.  One care and SP3 is like state and local government papers some of us recieve, if your not a lawyer forget it.  I never in 6 years had one problem with Nortons why in the world I picked this software I will never figure out.

  • Calvin,

I'm sorry that you have had problems with the SP3 update to XP. SP3 is an important security update to the operating system that you need to install if you have OneCare or not. Having OneCare adds the warning from OneCare that your PC is not up to date. A PC that is not up to date with the latest security patches from Microsoft for the operating system or other software (Office, for example) puts your PC in an at risk state, whether or not OneCare tells you about it.

Had you stayed with Norton or used a different security product would not change the fact that your PC is at risk without the latest security patches to the operating system.

As stated above, free help is available for resolving SP3 update problems - apart from support for OneCare.

  • Stephen I really appreciate your help on this mess and I apologise for coming on so strong but I have been through the page that was told to me and I still got no help.  I also called the telephone number and the same thing, only thing they want to talk about is Zone Alarm.  I tried again lastnight and set here for 2 hours just to get the same headache I always get when I try it.  Soon as I boot up One Care says I need to update so when I go there it says I need SP3 so I start the download and it downloads for almost 30 minutes just to get 3/4 way finished then it stops and says sorry SP3 cant finish.  So I have to click ok then it says now Windwos is going to remove everything it just installed and I wait another almost 20 minutes, just for it to stop and say now you have to reboot but Windows might not work right after this.  What in the world am I doing wrong, I do everything it says to do and always the same thing.  I am lost and it makes no sense.

And again Stephen I thank you so much for your help and all the others that has answered.

  • Hi Dave and thank you sir for your help.  An hour ago I went direct to Microsoft and tried there downloading SP3 and the same things again gets 3/4 way through and stops.  I will try some of your ideas and see what happens.  I apologize to One Care also.

I have turned everything off, and also backed up everything like One Care said to do and still no results.  So I will try your ideas Dave and thank you sir again.

  • Hi, I believe I have the same problem.

After installing SP3 on XP SP2  |  Windows LiveOne care crashes (can't update).

The ony solution is reinstalling. But I did this for the 3rd time. Still no sollution (I won't considder reinstalling the whole system).

Does anyone know a fix for this problem (the help online is sending me in circles won't solve the problem). Because I was pretty content whith this AV-programm and now I am not anymore.

    Regards, Martijn

  • Well I am back and Dave after trying everything you sent me and also calling them idiots on the telephone SP3 still wont install.  Microsoft sure is making things bad for some people. You pay out the rear for their products just to get more problems that they claim they can fix for yet another price.  What a bunch of *** I am through.

Calvin, I'm sorry that you continue to encounter problems. I am quite surprised that you are not being helped by Microsoft support for SP3 and also regarding your reference to them wanting to talk about Zone Alarm. Do you have any case numbers for your support calls. I can't promise anything, as I don't have contacts in that area, but perhaps the OneCare support management team can forward the concerns on to the appropriate team for review. Your case should still be open and you should be helped - free of charge - until the problem with XP SP3 is resolved.

Hello, Martijn. Your problem would appear to differ in that you have been able to install SP3, but now you have a problem with OneCare.

Please try using the cleanup tool before running the OneCare installation again.

You mention OneCare crashing and also mention an update problem. What exactly is the state of OneCare after you reinstall OneCare?

  • Well I apologize to One Care and anyone I upset on this forum.  I should of figured out when your dealing with Microsoft it takes times.  I finally after 6 trys got a answer on the telephone that one of you sent me and I thank you for that.  After hours and I am talking from 4 in the afternoon until 11:30 that night on the telephone with Microsoft to a lady in India yep India, she asked to take control of my computer and I had to download a small program so she could do this.  And hour after hour of setting here watching my mouse run all over my monitor she finally found the problem and installed the 1 missing file my system didn't have.

And would you believe this I have never had one problem out of this system that I built myself 2 years ago and installed everything in it myself there was 1 file missing from Microsoft XP, that file was cmd.com.

The lady in India found it installed it and she downloaded SP3 for me while I watched and now my One Care and everything else is running smooth again.  Unbelievable
