Cannot install Fix It Center using Run as Admin and why would setup have AUTORUN.EXE try to modify the Windows Socket Interface???? RRS feed

  • Question

  • [32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 - Windows is activated] ,begin edit> bump! <end edit>

After downloading FixitCenter_Run.exe I tried to install using "Run as Admin"

I almost simultaneously get a warning from my Firewall and an abort with info message from the install

?????????????? I wonder why and what for...

Run as Admin seems to work with everything else...

This does not serve to inspire much confidence.

  • Hello PhilippeCM,

The Alert message from C-O-M-O-D-O is simply informing that the program Autorun.exe is preparing a connection to the internet. In order to install Fix It Center (beta) we connect to the internet and download the actual MSI application.

The second dialog is actually by design were we prevent users from running the setup using Run As. Unlike other installation our setup requires the user to run a configuration step at the end of the installation which must be done by the user who is installing the software and not impersonating the Administrator.

In your case you can either log in to the machine using an account that has administrative rights or add yourself into the Administrators group.

  • Thank you Frank.

Considering that "As a first beta release, the target audience of the application is home consumers"[Daniel Chow] I do not see the point of preventing a home user to run the setup using Run As. It might make sense in a corporate environment, but I am pretty sure that most home users are their own Admins...

In any case, perusing the board made me a little cautious... I think I will wait until it goes out of Beta to install this.

  • Also... Considering that Autorun is muzzled on my system, I will probably get further error messages since as you mentioned the setup is relying on Autorun to proceed.

I have seen on another thread that it was suggested to disable Anti Malware programs prior to installing Fix-it, this is ludicrous.
