What's the position with XP, Virtual Machines and Activation. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there a way to operate either a retail version or OEM version of XP inside a virtual machine while the Host is activated. How does one activate the virtual machine without MS thinking you are running two separate machines. Is this possible?

  • As far as Windows licensing is concerned, a virtual machine or PC is treated as though it were a conventional computer.  It requires its own, individual license not used by another computer installation.

  • Hello Banger696,

The virtual XP machine that will run on business editions of Win7 is there only for backward compatibility purposes for those pesky line-of-business applications that won't be upgraded to run within Win7's security model.

  • So why are MS giving away a VHD of a pre-activated virtual machine of XP to run on Windows 7.
