    We received a pop up saying there were many virsus on this computer and wanted to download a program to fight them.   But Windows came on and said it was an unrecognized program..... was this from Windows????

    You may very well have many virus and other malware on the computer but don't click on the link to download the program recommended.  That is pure bait to get you to purchase a worthless program.
     
    What anti-virus program do you currently have installed?  After updating that program run a full scan on the computer.  When that is done download, install, update and run SpyBot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and when that one is done download, install and update Malwarebytes free version http://www.malwarebytes.org/. 
     
    Microsoft Security Essentials is a free and relatively good anti-malware, anti-virus program that if you don't have any protection it should be downloaded and installed.
