Firewall and suspending of certain services... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an issue where even if I am on a public network File & Printer Sharing is still active and Network Discovery is still active even though they show suspended in One Care.  Any clue on what is causing this?  I am currently running Vista Ultimate x64.  Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Sorry, I was thinking of the firewall settings in 1.x and I suspect in 2.0 on XP. I just loaded a Virtual machine with 2.0 running under Vista and see that the network settings for public/private are not controlled in OneCare.

This is what I see in Vista Network and Sharing Center -

Discovery is on and File and Printer Sharing is on.

Note that this was configured when I was connected at home. I'm not at work, and Network2 is identified as Public.

When I open OneCare, click on Change Settings and then go to Configure Firewall on the Firewall tab, I see that Network2 is identified as Public *and* OneCare has disabled File and printer Sharing and Network Discovery for that connection.

So, it appears that the view in Vista does not reflect the state of the settings in OneCare. That sure seems confusing, though.

You can confirm that on a public network these services are indeed shut down and cannot be changed in the Vista Network and Sharing Center by opening OneCare and going to the settings per the above.

In the OneCare settings, click on Change location and you will see the services change from Suspended to On when toggle from public to home/work.

  • How is the network identified in Vista's Network and Sharing Center?

In OneCare, for the firewall settings, is the setting for automatically change network settings checked or unchecked?

  • The network is identified as a public network.  Network discovery is set to Custom and neither "Turn On" or "Turn Off" is checked and file sharing is set to "On".  Both options are greyed out in file sharing and only "Turn off" is greyed out in network discovery.

  • If that is the case after I get into Network and Sharing Ceter and then click on View Computers and devices I shouldn't get anything correct?  Because if I do that I see several computers listed as network computers.

  • I'm going to have to tell you I'm not clear on what Network Discovery really does, but I can tell you that I have OneCare 2.0 on a PC that is sitting on the "public" network and I see other workgroup computers on the same network. I do not see any devices or computers not in the workgroup that the computer is configured to be a part of, but then I rename my workgroup. If your PC is part of the default "workgroup" you will see other computers that belong to "workgroup." However, when I go to another PC that is part of the same workgroup, I am not able to connect to the Vista machine that is running 2.0 as File and printer sharing has been suspended by OneCare. If I change the network in OneCare settings to be private, I am able to connect to the shared folders on the PC running 2.0.

  • You're very welcome. I think it is a good discussion as there could be confusion about the public/private based on what is showing in the Vista Network and Sharing Center. So I appreciate that you raised the issue.

  • I agree this is confusing. Unfortunately, network & sharing center displays setting as per Windows Firewall. OneCare has no way to reflect its own firewall state in that UI.

Please let us know if you think your computer was actually visible to other computers in a public place.

    Thanks
