Cannot complete the install RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello.  Today while downloading a file and typing a document, my computer all of a sudden restarted itself and then I found this in the lower right hand corner of the screen:

a red circle with a white x in the middle.  Every few seconds, it says that my computer is infected with spyware and that I should click to install it.  When I click, it beings installing a program called Antivirus Pro 2009.  I have NEVER heard of this and should I trust it?

Also, I have tried to install the OneCare Install to my computer and it gives me the following error code:

Has anyone ever had this problem and if so, how do I get rid of it?  I have tried going to the Microsoft page to download updates, but it will not allow me to do so.  I have downloaded the anti-virus scanner AVG (the latest) by Grisoft.  I have used this in the past, but I recently had to restore my computer so I had to re-download it.  I don't know how, I did, but I did.

I downloaded the AVG software again and it downloads fine, but it does not complete the install.  This is the message that it shows me:

    Local machine: installation failed

Error: Action failed for file avgemc.exe: starting service....

                Error 0x8007041d

Warning: Preparation to unload of the service avg8wd failed.

                Specified file was not found.

Error: Action failed for file avgwd.log: restoring from backup....

                Error 0x80070005 %DESTINATION% = "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\Log\avgwd.log", %SOURCE% = "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\Log\avgwd.log.install_backup"

Error: Action failed for file avgldx86.sys: starting service....

                Error 0x80070002

Has anyone else had this type of problem?

Please someone help me!  I am in desperate need!

    Thank you so much.

  • Wendy, your PC is infected by a variant of the WinAntivirusPro malware.

You won't be able to install any new security software until that is dealt with.

You can use one of the free online scanners to try and remove the infection:

http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/ <<== this one should work

You'll also find a slew of threads in the antivirus and antispyware topic folders here from people who encountered this malware. Although most are sent to support, if they are using OneCare, there are links to solutions for removal of the infection.

I'll close with the standard response regarding an infection reported here:

If you are using Windows Live OneCare and you have been infected, but OneCare did not detect or cannot remove the malware, please contact support to report this and for help with removal.

If  you are not using Windows Live OneCare, you are off topic for this forum. This is not a general forum for viruses, spyware, or Windows Help. For help with spyware issues, you may want to try the forums here:
