Fresh Windows 7 install cannot access server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Howdy guys,

Okay, so, on my desktop, I reformatted and reinstalled Windows 7, as I do every couple months.  Well, I could access my Home Server with no problem *before* I installed the connector software... I pulled some drivers out of the shared files and installed them with no problem - and while the connector was installing, I lost the ability to access the shared files.

Now, this is a weird problem, because the other computers in my house can access the shared files with no problem, and on the desktop that is experiencing the issue, I can connect with the console, through RDP, and I was managing some Virtual Machines using the Virtual Server 2005 R2 webpage (hosted on my server).  I also can't install the Media Center Connector.

Here is a screenshot of all the problems:

Here is the URL of the pic... http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/3857/wtfjc.jpg So yeah, any ideas? I've restarted both the server and my desktop, and re-ran discovery of the WHS, and it joins fine.

    Hello touche,
Here are some questions for you:

    1.  Are all of your computers on the same workgroup? (This includes the
    server)
    2.  Can you access the shared folders/libraries on your other computers
from the Windows 7 Computer, and vice versa?
    3.  If you open a command prompt and type in ipconfig (or ipconfig /all)
on all of the desktops, are they in the same network/subnet? (in other
words, do they all say something like 192.168.x.x where the first x is
the same, and the second x is different)?  Also, do they all have the
same IP address listed under Default Gateway?
    4.  What errors or messages do you get when you click the "Diagnose"
    button (in your screenshot)?

    Have a great day:)
    Patrick.

  • Could be firewall or name resolution issue. If you know the IP address of your server please check if you can access the shares when you enter IP address in Explorer address bar, for example \\192.168.1.105. Also please check if you file and printersharing enabled.

  • Hi Touche

I get the same issue, if I power down the server and repower it back up, i can get access to the server , but it seams after it is not used or over night, the Windows 7 just will not access the share folders, or WHS is blocking, i have turn off the fire wall and virus protection, and still have the same problem.

So have you found a soluction, as I dont like turning off and back on the server?

  • Please read the FAQ How to Troubleshoot Network Connection Problems with Windows Home Server.

Maybe you have a name resolution issue of some kind.
Does the user name with matching password exist on the server (and is the guest account on the server off)?
Are the system times, dates, timezones matching on client and server?
What happens, if you disable the Windows Firewall on the client for a short test?
Is the network marked as a private (Home or Work) network in the network and sharing center on the Windows 7 machine?

    Best greetings from Germany
