Refuses to start after Windows 7 update

  This morning my mom updated our windows 7.  On the restart of the computer it went to a black screen and stayed there for 15 minutes.  I manually shut down the inactive computer and tried to restart.  It finally got past the blank screen but is now on an unfamiliar screen without andy programs or anything.  We have initialized a backup already but what should we do now to get our computer back to normal?
