Can you go back to old version? RRS feed

  • Question

  • This update is terrible.  It adds features I don't need, and reduces the utility of the backup to the point it isn't really backing up the computer in case of a catastrophic failure by deleting much of the programs content of the drive.  It doesn't even let you know about these changes or give you a chance not to upgrade.  Just takes control of your computer - "we know better".  Now I have to run a separate backup program.  This tips me in the direction of letting my subscription just expire and going back to Norton.

  • While backup changed in 2.0, backup in OneCare *never* performed a system backup and backing up program folders and files would not allow them to function after a Windows reinstall and restore of those files.

To answer the question in the title, though, no. Since OneCare is a subscription program, each update replaces the prior versions and any old versions will automatically update to the latest code on installation.

  • So even when I told it to do a complete backup of C: including folders like Windows and Program Files it didn't?  That's even worse if the original led you to believe it would do something it couldn't.

I know you don't work for Microsoft, and appreciate the time you put in to moderate the forum, but please pass on this one cost them a OneCare customer.

Will they refund a pro-rated share of the annual fee?

  • Actually, it *did* back up all of those files and folders in 1.x if you selected them as additional folders to back up. The problem, though, was that restoring them was pretty useless since Programs can't restore that way and neither can Windows. What you desire is full image backup from a program like Symantec Ghost or Acronis True Image. In the event of a catastrophic drive failure, the entire disk can be restored to a replacement drive. This has never been possible in OneCare. Windows Vista Business and Ultimate editions have this feature included. Windows Home Server also allows you to restore from a catastrophic failure. OneCare backup has always been about the data. After restoring Windows and reinstalling your programs (and OneCare) using the OneCare restore, you would recover your data files.

The official policy on refunds in the US (may vary elsewhere) is 30 days, but I would imagine you can ask. You'd need to contact customer service (via support).

  • I think, however, the need to select specific sub-folders within "Program Files" should be available, because some programs store data in their subfolders rather in "Documents and Settings" and their subfolders. While this may not be the best way for a program do store data, neverless it is done and should be accessible for backing up.

Onecare rebooted my computer last night. This I do not want as I run programs on it all the time. Therefore I checked the "Download and do not Install option" for Windows Updates and Onecare turned bright rosy red and thought I had selected "Notify only do not download". It couldn't tell the difference.

Onecare backup V2 could not open my 2007 restore folder made from the previous version. I had to delete it and start over. Deleting that folder was a feat in and of itself since Windows says: "Oh, no you don't!" I had to reformat the backup drive and start over.

Not a happy camper wit this version.

I do agree that the backup program needs more work for some users to find it useful. Most programs won't store data in the \Program Files folders, nor should they. So, it would appear to be a stand-off between Microsoft and developers who didn't follow guidelines, unfortunately, and customers are the losers. :-(

OneCare has *never* allowed the AU settings to be anything other than download and install, either immediately or at a scheduled time. I don't agree with this simplistic approach either, but it serves to protect the majority. I can't tell you the number of infected PCs I have worked on where the AU shield happily displayed available updates in the system tray and notified the users every day about updates and when I installed them, several months and even years of updates began installing.
