Resource Management Case Study - anybody know of one? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi folks,

I've been looking thru a lot of the blogs and other documentation available online as well as the (very good) Project Server Experts books and I still haven't been able to get a good sense of what Resource Management might feel/look/work like when it is embedded and actually working (acknowledging, of course, that it may well be very different in different organisations).

All the info I've been able to find seems to come at RM from a technical/tool configuration/theory point of view rather than from the basis of an implemented working solution where reality/business process/people/social aspects/uncertainty/changing priorities/conflicting needs/"resistance" etc are acknowledged or discussed.

Quite a tall order! but I wonder if anyone has seen any kind of case study or other documentation that tries to get under the skin of Resource Management even a bit?

    Thanks for any replies/thoughts/discussion!

    Cheers

    Paul

  • Hello Paul,

There is a real time case study for RM:
    http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?casestudyid=4000007234

As you mentioned that you have gone through many posts/blogs for RM. I had implemented PS2007 for one of the customer & they used it in very beautiful manner. To start with, they used a third party tool (TPG- Resource link) to get resources with all other AD data (as mapped in Custom fields), On the basis of the Custiom fields & we created lot of reports for capacity planning & placing the resources in a project on the right skill set data. That was one stop solution for all Resource Managers to find the resources in system based on the skill/availibility/departments & other factors  & We had created a ResourceRequest form which had a workflow to automate the some part of process which used data from resource pool of project server.

Hope that gives you a start :)

  • Thanks Amit - good to hear about your experiences. Thanks too for the link but that is a differnt kind of "Case Study" to the type of thing I had in mind.
