Find duplicate files within shares and backup RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • As I haven't got the hardware ready to test Vail yet, I'd like to plan how much HDD space I'll be needing.
One thing I've noticed during the time using whs1 is that it is capable of scanning the backups and making sure that if an identlical file is found on more than one computer it is still only backed up once. I guess I'm not the only one who have realised that the network shares have been filled with many duplicate files from various users simply because they didn't know it was already there. I've seen huge files on my server stored both in computer backups and many copies in various sub folders in the shares and user folders which are also being duplicated by DE.

Wouldn't it be possible first of all to allow the whs system to scan for duplicate files and allow the user to specify the correct folder where the file should be and then delete other copies? Also, if copies are found on the client (or client backups), one should be able to delete the file from the client as well.
As far as I understand the new DE, it will use up a whole lot of space. I think some way of finding duplicate files like this should be built in to the whs vail.

  • There are various tools available that will scan a folder, or set of folders, for duplicate files. I don't think Microsoft is going to build such a tool into Windows Home Server, however. That said, you can always submit a product suggestion on Connect .

And backups are still completely separate from the shares. Data is not shared between them.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Any of those duplication files addin projects still active? I'll probably give it a try before submitting this to connect...

  • None of them would install on Vail, even if there were such an add-in today.
