My copy of xp pro will not validate RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have tried everything to fix t his issue, even spent over an hour on the phone with microsoft to no avail. I have also googled all kinds of things on this too to no avail. I had to swap out motherboard and processor, ram and video card because previous motherboard fried. Then i had to do a reinstall of xp over xp, because i had no backup of my drive to save my data. After much messing around, i finally got the printout for the validation crud "below". The microsoft guy finally told me that my validation files were corrupt on my drive and that i'd have to do a format install. I refuse to believe this, as there has to be a way to fix this. My system boots up asking me to validate, but if i hit yes, it just freezes on a blank desktop screen. if i hit no, i can get to the desktop and do things, but this system promptly tells me i only have 3 days to fix the problem. Here's a hint microsoft, you fix it!!!!! I also had to delete ie8 because that was all fubar too. Please, someone help me.

  • Hello Richard Santora,

The Activation Wizard runs on IE, so if IE has been damaged by either what happened before that caused you to try the reinstallation, or by the results of the reinstallation, then the Activation Wizard is not going to be able to work properly.

Repair reinstallations of XP have become much more complicated when IE7 or IE8 have been installed, and I think your current state of affairs may be the result of not following the instructions in this KB:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978788

IMO you best course of action at this point would be to see if you can resuscitate IE by following the steps in this KB:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

If that does not work, then back up your data and do a clean installation of XP.

  • Hi there, i have fixed the issue, i believe it was because i was still running service pack 2 that it would not activate. Because once i downloaded and installed SP3 the account activation worked fine on the following bootup and i was able to get all the updates done, and everything is running great now. Something i'll need to remember for the future. Thank you all for your help!

  • I did that already, and the messed up validation problem is what i'm left with. I've managed to get everything to show that it's validated on microsofts site, but it still tells me that i need to buy i new license or purchase windows 7, that's total bs, i paid my money for an os, and i want to keep using that one. There must be something else i can do? I can get to "below", then i click on the "validate" button, and second "below" is what i get.

I did that already, and the messed up validation problem is what i'm left with.

You appear to be confusing Activation and Validation - they are two very different things.

Validation passes because you are still within the Grace Period allowed for activation - this is by design.
Validation is not compulsory unless you want access to certain benefits, but is there as a check that the system is not running outside the licensing restrictions.

Activation is mandatory for all PC installs, and is what your system is requesting.
If it will not activate, that's a different question altogether.
What actual error message do you get when you try to *Activate* your machine?
I see you apparently have IE 8 installed - have you reinstalled that since you reinstalled XP? If not, then do so, as reinstalling XP will have reinstalled IE6, and broken a lot of the 'stuff' that goes on  in the background with IE.

  • I'll reinstall ie8, but after i first started the computer from the xp reinstall, it was totally fragged, the icons all changed and it wouldn't work. Nor would the activation, on system boot up, if i hit "yes" at the activation prompt, it would just go to the desktop image with no icons or start menu or clock or anything, just a picture and a mouse cursor, at which point i'd have to restart the machine. If i click "no" i can get to the desktop to do things and use programs, but can't get the activation program to work. I can find it in the start menu, but if i click on it, it just makes an hour glass on the mouse for a quarter second, and then disappears and nothing happens.

Interesting - it's not the first time I've heard of an SP3 update fixing the problem, so it may be that there is some specific file-checking or reinstallations that SP3 does that fixes the issues you were seeing. Another one for the fix library :)

Thanks for the feedback - and good luck!
