Move default share to a different Hard Drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I tried searching to see if this has been asked, but I didn't find an answer.

I  know you can't delete a default share, but is it possible to move a default share, example "videos", to a different drive thats outside the storage pool?

  • Well, I went ahead and did it anyway.  Moved the default "video" share to a RAID setup outside the storage pool.  WHS picked it up right away, and added it to the console without issue under the shared tab, and it recognizes it as a default share, but does not care that its not in the storage pool  (duplication is turned off).  I only had to reset permissions for the users.  It works perfectly.

I wanted a large library of movies on a faster RAID setup outside the regular storage pool drives.  Its now streaming alot faster, and no issues with multiple PC's streaming off the same drives.  It also now is faster for the other users that need the data from shares in the storage pool, and is not slowed down by PC's streaming video.  And because I moved the default "Videos" share, the media extender functions still work perfectly.

  • Windows Home Server doesn't allow you to specify where shares are stored.  Also it's not a good idea to create shares outside of the Windows Home Server Console.

  • You can create your own shares outside WHS console, but you don't get any of the benefits of the storage pool, etc.

  • It's possible, but unsupported, to make some changes in how Windows Home Server manages one or more shares. I would recommend you try a server recovery before you declare success, though; I have a feeling that you will have severe problems reintegrating the share on the RAID array. Possibly (not all that likely, however) you will lose a great deal of data, and you can't say you've succeeded if you don't have a recovery strategy in case of e.g. OS corruption that results in a non-bootable server.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks for the input.

Actually I thought of that, but its not an issue.  The RAID racks can be pulled and inserted on one of my other machines, and any of the drives data can be read, its just NTFS data. (I tried and it works)  My WHS storage pool is on its own RAID as well, and I'm not worried about restoring a dead OS, those drives also can be read on any other OS, I would just need the data files, not OS data. (tried that as well and it works)
