Adding a second external drive to WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I only have one 500GB drive in my home server and I'm running low on space already. Is there anything that I need to know before adding a second 500GB drive to my home server? I will have to disconnect a CD/DVD combo drive from the motherboard as there are only 2 SATA slots in total on my board but I only needed it for the initial installation

  • It looks like you're adding an INTERNAL drive.  anyhow, no special things I can think off....so:

    1)Power off your WHS

    2)connect the drive

    3)Power on your WHS

4)Open the console, storage tab  (the new drive should be visible)

    5) add it to your storagepool.

    Done

  • You could also install a sata card in a vacant pci slot on your motherboard thus giving you additional sata access points to install new sata hard drives.

  • the only problem with that is the pci slot is in an awkward space as I built it in a media centre case and there are no external PCI slots but I will just lose the DVD drive

  • I understand that situation all too well.

    My HTPC case is this.

My Sata card is this which works great as I also have the ability to use IDE also.

    My Sata cables are here.

My Motherboard has right angle Sata ports and with them right behind the 3 1/2 System drive I had some install worries but all worked out fine in the end.

    Good Luck
