False Activation Message on Two computers when it is RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a version of Windows 7 professional for students (for £30) and got a version for my laptop from MSDNAA, but I am now getting messages on both that it is not legitimate. Can you tell me what is wrong.

This is the MGADiag output from the first:

Can someone tell me what is wrong?

Please create a new thread for the second machine - otherwise everyone is going to get VERY confused!
I'll deal with the first in a separate response to this thread

I bought a version of Windows 7 professional for students (for £30) and got a version for my laptop from MSDNAA, but I am now getting messages on both that it is not legitimate. Can you tell me what is wrong.

This is the MGADiag output from the first:

The problems with this machine are highlighted above - a large number of files are being reported as mismatched, meaning that they are either not the versions expected, or they have in some way become corrupted.

A question - have you been running any form of registry optimiser/cleaner on the system?

Try a System Restore back to about three days prior to noticing the problem  if you can - reboot again when complete, and see if the notification goes away. Run MGADiag and have a look to see if the mismatches have gone.

If that doesn't work, or fails to fix the problem - or you don't want to use it, try a System File Checker - it will attempt to replace the broken file and any others it finds.
    System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search  box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
     - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC   /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

kl, just ran it and this was returned:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>SFC /SCANNOW

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th

    em.

Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

    The file is here: http://www.mechanicalfire.co.uk/640m-CBS.log

    Not entirely unexpected :(
(Have you been running a Registry Cleaner/Optimiser?)

My test Win 7 machine is in the middle of a log run at the moment - I'd like to play a little before I respond on this one, and see if I can get something that works, if you don't mind being a guinea-pig?

If you're not keen on the idea, I can understand :)

The conventional response at this point is to push you to MS WGA Support  - I see you're in the UK?
with a bit of luck you'll get the right page :)

OK - I'll get started first thing then (I'm in Wales)

I may be seeing a way ahead, but it's very easy to start barking up the wrong tree.
let's check one file first before I charge in :)

Please open Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder
right-click on the file SLC.DLL and select Properties
What is the Size listed as?
Click on Details - list the properties and values in your reply
    Click on the Security tab
    then click on Advanced
List the Permission entries, and their permissions in your reply
Click on the Owner tab - who is listed as the current Owner?
OK out, and post the data - I'll take a look and see what I can see (if anything!)
In the meantime, please run a CHKDSK C: /F (you'll have to reboot)

(BTW - I still can't access your CBS logs?)

Let me just check - you ARE using Win 7 32-bit, aren't you?
(System Properties will tell you if you're using x64/64-bit)
Those numbers look right to me
    (message sent)
    Zzzzzzzzzzzz........

That filesize looks right, as is the Owner
What about the permissions for the user list?
I've been looking at your CBS log
    (xnoel860m-CBS)
It looks to me as if there may be some pending or broken update installs. (although my fully- patched system has the same version of the affected files, something may be affecting the way Windows is seeing them).
The log also looks incomplete for some reason - can you check your copy, and see if the last line reads

2011-01-31 00:07:38, Info                  CBS    Appl: Partial install Status testing, package: Package_for_KB980218~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.1.2, partially installed (true/false), 0

Please download and install Belarc Advisor  - see if it reports any broken or missing updates, and if so, which ones
Please look in your Windows Update history - see if there's any failed updates there, and any pending ones in the current status.

    Post back with details :)

Then try running SFC again - put up your new CBS.log at the same place - call it x2noel860m-CBS.log so I can find it :)

  • No activity in this thread for 7 days.

I assume the issue was somehow resolved.
