  • I've uploaded a file - a6jab.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these
    instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start
tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which
should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

    Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

    At the prompt type

    DIR C:\a6jab

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

    DIR D:\a6jab

    or

    DIR E:\a6jab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following
    command...

    XCOPY  <drive>:\a6jab  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type

    EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt, and then run another CheckSUR scan

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log and CheckSUR.log files to your SkyDrive Public folder, and
    post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

  • You need to enter in the Product Code that is listed on your COA (Certificate of Authenticity) Sticker that is either on the back of your PC or in the battery compartment.  The OS version you have installed must also match the one that is listed on the sticker.

  • Actually, in this case it may be elsewhere, since it's a Retail Key.

Retail Keys are on the Proof of License label on a card inside the packaging in which the OS came (or an email, in the case of purchases from the online MS store)

  • Do you mean I need to enter the "Product Key" ? This copy of windows has been activated for over a year, but I tried to re-enter the product key through Control Panel/System & Security/System. I get the following error: Code 0xC004F008 "the software licensing service reported that the license could not be found."

  • Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case or on the PoL label

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

  • When I enter this line: REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

I get: "a duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found"

    Wednesday, October 2, 2013 4:04 AM
  • In that case, someone has probably already attempted the fix previously.

Try adding this line to the above, before the REN line....

    DEL tokens.ba*

hit Y if asked to confirm,

then complete with the REN command, etc.

  • Hrm, well I got through the process and the dialog pops up that says "windows is not genuine. go online to resolve the problem?"

Thanks for the help so far! This is pretty aggravating, especially since nothing is the MS documentation or help acknowledges the possibility that their software protection may be screwed up...instead of me being a software pirate or too ignorant to know how to buy a copy of licensed software :)

Here is the new report after renaming the tokens file.

  • I've tried that link several times today (and yesterday) and this is all I get (link below):

I also tried this with my firewall OFF and the same result.

  • According to the report, the last time it was validated (success or failure) was 29th Sept.

The link you posted merely causes me to validate - please tell us what you see.

  • I just get a page that says "windows validation was interrupted. The validation service is not available at this time. Please try again later."

I tried several times over the course of 48 hours. I uninstalled the updated for the validation tool. Downloaded the tool again, and the same result.

  • Odd - I suspect that there's a problem with your firewall or some such. What security software are you using?

  • I use McAfee AV Plus, but I tried the validation with both McAfee and MS firewall set to off. Same result.

What I'm confused by, is why Windows would "suddenly" think my copy is not genuine after a couple of years of working fine?

    Sunday, October 6, 2013 3:59 PM
  • The classic reasons are corruption of either the registry (by accident or design - often from the use of Registry 'Cleaners') or of files - from malware, forced shutdowns, or disk corruption.

I'm tempted to blame McAfee - it's associated with a number of problems here - but I have no proof, yet.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • Hey Noel,

    Here is the CBS.log. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/517432/Share/CBS.log

Chkdsk ran clean but sfc scannow did say there was an error but was unable to repair.

    New MGADiag below

I'll post a fix protocol for them later, but it may be a good idea to run another tool as well, as it may find more problems...

Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

  • I've uploaded a file - a6jaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

    Pick that

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

    At the prompt type

    DIR C:\a6jaa

hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try

    DIR D:\a6jaa

    or

    DIR E:\a6jaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY
    <drive>:\a6jaa  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type

    EXIT

and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt

then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

  • SFC is clear now - but I don't see any new result from CheckSUR?

Please run another scan, and post the log and we'll see what we see :)

Then attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer - what happens?

  • CheckSUR (below) is the second link in my previous post :)

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/517432/Share/CheckSUR.persist%20%283%29.log

I tried validation again and the same result as the first time: "Windows Validation was Interrupted" ... buy Windows!

For some reason I still can't post actual links or photos :(

    Thanks!

  • Good - that's clear now :)

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

  • Holy Shnikes it worked! Thanks a million Noel!

Are all those errors something that can be avoided in the future?

  • I suspect that this type of corruption is 'act of god' rather than anything else - perhaps a power outage at the wrong time or similar, or perhaps a badly-seated component in the machine.

There's not a lot you can do to legislate for things like that :(

    Good luck!
