explore black screen cannot enter vista key RRS feed

  • Folks
My Dell laptop came preinstalled with vista home. I have the original install disk.
Upgraded to vista premium. I have the (registered) disk. While surfing AVG virus suggested I had
a virus/malware attack in a .tmp file. Suggested I reboot. On restart explore failed to start and displayed error code.
I have retried safe mode, last known good configuration, system restore, startup repair, boot from CD, c: prompt  and reinstall.
Vista reports I must retry my original install disk. Not effective. My serial numbers are not recognized on either original or upgrade.
Previously with all MS-DOS and windows I would reinstall over previous installations etc.
In safe mode explore will not display and cannot be forced to operate rendering my choices limited.
I can enter/make iexplore operate in safe mode and network through management console.
Please help while i do further research.

  • Hello rdmceachern,

If you do not have a current backup of your valuable files, research the technique of starting the computer with an offline operating system (IOW, one that runs from a CD drive only) to rescue whatever files you need to save to a flash drive, CD drive, external disk, or newtork computer.

Once that's done, use the Dell PC Restore recovery procedure to recover the computer back to out-of-the-box condition.  To find out more about this, go to http://support.dell.com, enter your computer's Service Tag, then look for instructions on how to recover the original Windows installation.

IMO this is the best way to ensure that you have eradicated the virus that may be responsible for this situation.
