Windows keys becoming invalid RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a computer with an OEM version of XP pro.  I have had this for 5 years. I recently went to reinstall windows on my laptop and windows is saying my key is invalid. Does the CD key expire? As In since XP has gone through three service pacvks. did the batch my key came from get dropped off. and how do i submit my key for a new one. My key is registered to me with microsoft.

Also a CS rep from the OEM told me that my key should work with either home or pro windows. I had a scratched disk and had to get a replacement. they sent the wrong version. I got home instead of pro. They are resending pro.

  • Hello xgatorx,

If your OEM sends you a genuine OEM CD for XP Pro, then the OEM Product Key for XP Pro on the (presumably) genuine CoA affixed to the computer will work.

    If not, post back here.

  • Hello xgatorx,

An XP Pro Product Key will NOT work with an XP Home CD.

When you get the XP Pro CD from the OEM, it should accept the Product Key on the XP Pro CoA which should have been affixed to the computer by your OEM.
