Office 2002 Product Key misused, stolen, or not valid

Question

My old computer died. I installed my old Office 2002 software (which I bought) on my new computer and now every time Office loads it says it is not genuine.
Diagnostic tool results: (why can't the diagnostic tool just tell me what's wrong?)
Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0):

Hello Glider_Guider,
Go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button.
When Office fails validation, you will be presented with an explanation.
That explanation is a condensed version of this:
Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:
OGA Data-->
Office Status: 108 Invalid VLK
Microsoft Office XP Professional - 108 Invalid VLK

Office Diagnostics: 77F760FE-153-80070002_7E90FEE8-175-80070002_025D1FF3-364-80041010_025D1FF3-229-80041010_025D1FF3-230-1_025D1FF3-517-80040154_025D1FF3-237-80040154_025D1FF3-238-2_025D1FF3-244-80070002_025D1FF3-258-3_E2AD56EA-765-d003_E2AD56EA-766-0_E2AD56EA-134-80004005The Office XP Professional installed on your HP Pavilion computer is an edition of Office that is properly sold only thru the Volume Licensing program to larger businesses, educational institutions and governmental agencies. This installation was done with an invalid Product Key made by a pirating program known as a Key Generator. The product key was NOT issued by Microsoft, making it Invalid.
(Invalid VLK= Volume Licensing [Product] Key)
If your use of the installed Office XP Professional is in association with a larger business, educational institution, or governmental agency that might have a Volume Licensing Agreement with Microsoft for the use of this product, please report this nongenuine problem to your organization's IT support staff for further troubleshooting and resolution.
If you are an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing materials such as a VL disc, and you certainly should not have received an Invalid Product Key.
Your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand a full refund. If the seller refuses to help, please pursue whatever remedies are available to you thru the selling venue, your payment method (credit card, PayPal, etc), or the legal system in your area.
Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer. Please see the FAQ here: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC If you decide to participate in the Office Genuine Offer, please initiate the process by clicking on the "Learn More Online" link shown in the nongenuine notices on your screen. Or, click on the Office Complimentary Offer links that are shown on the right side of the failed validation page after running Office Validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine.
One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine. This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs. You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

Thank you for the quick response. I am an individual consumer. I purchased the software MANY years ago and as such do not remember from whom (I suspect Office 2002 hasn't been sold for many years now and is probably no longer supported).
I have the two "genuine" Microsoft CDs which have the Microsoft holograms and had no problem installing and using the software.
I understand this is not your fault and I do appreciate your feedback, but my conclusion is that it is less painful for me to put up with the VERY ANNOYING "not genuine" message than to jump through all the "Office Complimentary Offer" hoops.
This unpleasant, daily message will certainly affect my future purchasing decisions. Customers such as myself, who purchased Microsoft software, should not be treated as criminals. I'm beginning to understand why so many people dislike Microsoft.

Hello Glider_Guider,
You wrote, "my conclusion is that it is less painful for me to put up with the VERY ANNOYING "not genuine" message than to jump through all the "Office Complimentary Offer" hoops."
It takes less than five minutes to fill out the requested report, print it, then put the report and the disc(s) in an envelope and mail it. A 9" X 11-1/2" manila envelope with the report and two discs inside costs $1.22 in first class postage. For that 5 minutes and $1.22, Microsoft will send you Office Professional 2007 which had an MSRP of $499.99.
Many people may dislike Microsoft, but I can guarantee that the ones who spent 5 minutes and $1.22 to send in counterfeit copies of Office to be replaced for free with Genuine Office are not among them. I can guarantee that these people do not feel like they were being treated like criminals by Microsoft.
You wrote, "This unpleasant, daily message will certainly affect my future purchasing decisions."
Yes, I hope it would encourage you to purchase Genuine software (no matter by whom it is published--Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, etc) rather than nongenuine software.

I used to defend Microsoft as you are doing and everything you said was ALMOST correct.
But you omitted one critical element.
I am unable to provide the required "Office Complimentary Offer" information since, as previously stated, I purchased the software MANY years ago and don't remember from whom and no longer have a receipt. Unless I misread the terms, one can't participate without that documentation.
Some people may keep records of software they purchased 6-8 years ago, but I don't and I suspect most other people don't either.

So download and run Open Office which is a free public domain piece of software and with the right default settings changed will function with a lot more horsepower than your outdated Office XP and will read, edit and write to Office formatted files. Goodbye to Microsoft and we aren't sorry to see you go.Wednesday, September 29, 2010 5:39 PM
