install + activate after third computer RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I have One Care installed and running on two computers.

About a month ago I had bought an ASUS and installed the One Care on this notebook as well, however after about a week the computer totally crashed and I returned it to Best Buy (motherboard had fried).

Now I bought a new notebook and I am trying to install the One Care on this machine (as my third computer) but the activation process is telling me that I already have 3 computer activated.

My question: how can I UNactivate the ASUS computer so I can register it on my new computer??

  • On one of the other PCs that are running OneCare and activated, open OneCare, click on Your OneCare Circle, make the PC a Hub computer, sign in, and then select the machine that you previously activated OneCare on, but returned. Click "remove this PC" in the details for that machine.

I do find it odd that you encountered this, though, as you should not see that issue unless you activated OneCare many times with your LiveID.

OK, that worked, thanks. I was able to delete that third computer. I also see all the three computers in the hub computer.

However, the other 2 computers now say (at the left bottom) that the expiration day is 8/11/2009 while the third computer states "One Care protection for this PC will end in 84 days...Subscribe now".

What do I need to do for this third computer to have the same ending date since it runs on the subscription?

    THANKS.

  • The new PC is in trial mode. Click Subscribe in OneCare on that PC and activate it with the subscription LiveID and it will become part of the subscription. If it had been subscribed, it would seem that the returned PC and the new PC were seen by OneCare as the same PC, so removing the old PC from the Circle actually unsubscribed the replacement.

  • I did that, but it came back with the message that "it looks like you need to buy a subscription".

But there are only 3 computers in my "circle"...

If you have an active subscription, which is what was created when you activated on the first computer, you need to use the same LiveID on the subsequent activations. If you are arriving at a screen to purchase or provide a token, you are likely not using the same LiveID as the subscription ID.

On the first PC, open OneCare and click Help and then About to see your Subscription ID. That is the LiveID to sign in with.

If the activation dialog already contains a LiveID from a prior attempt or one used in trial mode, but this is not the one you need to activate with to associate it with your subscription, see this post for how to reset this - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2776450&SiteID=2
