HPC 2008 SP2 Upgrade Failed RRS feed

  • Question

  • On a single Headnode/ComputeNode VM server that has HPC 2008 SP1 installed on it I got a failure message while running the upgrade to SP2.

Anyone else running into upgrade issues?

    Install file: HPC2008_SP2_x64.exe

Dialog Box Title: Microsoft HPC Pack 2008

    Dialog Box Text:

Windows installer failed to apply the Service Pack (exit code: 1603).

For detailed information, check the Windows Installer log:

    C:\Users\scottp\AppData\Local\2\HPC_PATCH.log

I have the log file should it be useful to someone but can't post it here (too long).

  • After getting the log file and the repro steps info, I’m able to repro this issue on my dev box now and have figured out the root cause.

Root cause: this involves installing head node from another head node’s \\HN\REMINST shared folder, but we are not supporting doing this in this version of product (Microsoft HPC Pack 2008, i.e. HPC V2).

Workaround: Please run setup.exe from either RTM / SP source.
