IE8 will not open after installing Windows 7: Microsoft Visual C++ error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Prior to installing Windows 7, I was successfully running XP sp2 with IE8.  After installing Windows 7, I get the following error message when requesting IE8 startup:

    ~Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    ~Runtime Error!

    ~Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

    ~This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
    ~Please contact the applications support team or a solution.

    I have tried the following:

    Uninstalled and reinstalled IE8
    Uninstalled old versions of Visual C++
    Uninstalled and reinstalled most recent version of Visual C++
    Uninstalled Google toolbar
    Uninstalled three other unused toolbars using Revo Uninstaller which scans the registry for associated registry files from the removed toolbars
    Run Registry Mechanic
    Reset IE8 to default settings
    Run Internet Explorer Performance troubleshooter through the control panel in Windows 7
    Run Internet Explorer Safety troubleshooter through the control panel in Windows 7
    rebooted after every attempted fix

    Someone ~please~ help me...
