Valid Product Key?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have two (2) genuine copies of Windows XP Pro, one is loaded into my laptop. The second was loaded onto an older system that was parted out. Last year I purchased a desktop system with an invalid key, no receipt. How do I determine which copy is available to be reloaded onto the newer desktop system.

  • Try the following:

Visit http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html  and download the free Belarc Advisor on your laptop. After running the program, look under the section titled "Software Licenses" to find the Product Key used on your laptop. Once this is accomplished, use your other Product Key to install Windows XP Professional on your new PC.

Download the WGA Diagnostics tool here:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Then run the tool on the laptop.  With the data from the log file you should be able to match the product key being used with the laptop to one of the two copies of Windows XP Pro you have.

    I hope this helps,

    Greg
