Adding an external 4TB Western Digital eSATA disc to WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • When adding the drive over eSATA, My HP Media Smart server just hangs, when I add the drive over USB it will only format to 2TB and leave the rest as "System". Hence it looks like WHS cant handle disc´s bigger than 2TB :-(

Any ideas how I can get the drive to work over eSATA (external port on the back) and use the 4TB for storage?

I have in total 8,5TB prior installing the 4TB WD disc

    (internal ,5+ 1 +1 +2 TB external 2+2 TB over USB)

Would be a disaster if I cant use it, wasnt cheap...

  • You will not be able to add that drive (WD My Book Studio Edition II? It's really two drives in RAID 0) to your server and get access to the full 4 TB, no matter what you do. Windows Home Server will format the drive as a basic disk, using an MBR partition table, and that's limited to 2 TB. I can't tell you why your HP MediaSmart server doesn't recognize the drive, but it's probably related to the RAID controller in the drive.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
