SyncToy not backing up OneDrive or SharePoint Files RRS feed

  • Question

  • I set up folder pairs for backing up OneDrive Files and SharePoint Files to an external hard drive.  The ECHO functionality worked perfectly until last Friday, April 6th.  SyncToy continues to back up any files on the local drive (Documents, Pictures, Desktop).  Has something changed?  Please help as this functionality is business critical.

  • Did you run a Windows update before you noticed the problem? I just posted about my new issue syncing to OneDrive after I updated..

    What error do you get?

  • I am having the same issue as of last night

  • A similar thing happened to me, however instead of just not backing up new files, it deleted everything from my backup drive.

Insane, but thanks for posting this as I thought mine was an isolated case.

  • Hi

I've had exactly the same issues for a few weeks now. I'm not sure when it started - back in February I think - stupid me justt assumed everything was backing up as normal and didn't check.

This issue seems to be limited only to OneDrive files, as my Dropbox files are backing up to my external drive no problem with SyncToy.  Therefore I say this is a OneDrive problem, not a SyncToy issue

  • OK I think I have a solution

The issue seems to be BOTH Synctoy and how it interacts with Onedrive - I'm a geek, but not  computer geek so that's as much as I can tell you.

The workaround has been to ditch Synctoy and use FreeFileSync instead

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/

Frustrating, as SyncToy used to work very well and had a really simple interface for clowns like me

  • Hi. Have the same problem since last OneDrive Update. I´m sad that Microsoft hasn´t  solve this problem yet since for someone who want to have an updated backup into an external drive and at the same time sync those files in OneDrive, now with the latest update it makes it imposible.

Hope they solve it son maybe with a SyncToy update.

  • I have exactly the same problem.  If I try to sync c:onedrive/documents/data, for example, SyncToy doesn't seem to see the subfolders within the folder, ending up deletng them from the target destination.  My workaround works but is a bit tedious:

    -  Set up a new synctoy pair for each subfolder

    -  Run synctoy for the parent folder (onedrive/documents/data in my case), which has the unwanted side-effect of deleting the subfolder(s) from the target destination.

    -  Then run synctoy for the subfolder(s)

As long as you get the synchronize/echo etc settings right, this repopulates the subfolder(s) in the target destination - at least in my case.

As I say, tedious and something that shouldn't have happened.

  • I ran into a similar issue with SyncToy reporting an error about "Cloud provider not running" for a bunch of files. Even though OneDrive was set to "Sync all files" it also defaults to "Safe space on drive" which downloads OneDrive files "on demand". If you uncheck this "Save space" option and let OneDrive sync THEN run SyncToy again and the copy should work.

  • Same for me and also windows backup (file history) has stopped backing up files also, it runs but only backs up c drive docs pictures. This started for me at the beginning of November.
