  • I hear ya,

this Buffer overrun detection is a ***.

I have XP Home Edition SP2 and managed to clear it for a few days doing a system restore, but it's come back twice now. It renders IE6 & IE7 useless.

The call is out, does anyone know how to fix this problem?

I have fixed the problem on my P.C. (Win XP Pro SP2, IE7)

My overun error was caused by a DLL file that is a bad virus or trojan. As a Jpeg file, It was opened by my son on MSN.

It took me 4 days to work it out. It lives in the windows\system32 folder. I tried 3 spyware programs & Norton Antivirus 2006 but the file kept coming back. I fixed the problem by downloading a Program called PrevX1,at no cost with a trial period of 1 month.

    Go to http://www.prevx.com/

Download and run it, It worked for me.

I am sorry I have forgotten the file name but it changes itself a few times.

My problem caused windows explorer to crash and IE to go crazy at times loading up new pages very fast.

I have had my itunes quit running.  After two days of messing with it I discovered that Quicktime was deleted.(I didn't do it ).  I went in to re-install the stand alone QT and it is telling me that it is missing files.  When I open the properties I get the Buffer Overrun detected.

I have run Norton (which I recently removed from my system, after all this happened) didn't help.  I have also run AdAware, Reg Clean, Housecall, and PreVX. It finds nothing.

Can anyone give me any other help?

  • Thank you Kim,

This also worked for me!!!! I decided to pay the $24.95 for the program and receive daily updates.

Not sure why I am paying for McAfee as it couldn't find any issues and appears to be worthless!!!!!!

  • I had same problem with WinXP SP2 IE6

    error message:

    "Microsoft visual C++ Runtime library
    Buffer overrun detected!
    Program C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe
A bufer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated"

Computer was clean from viruses, trojans etc. I searched for days for the solution, installed IE7, still same error.
One thing i found is, that some IE toolbars seems to cause this problem. So started to uninstall these external IE toolbars. 1st one i removed was dict.cc (a translator toolbar) and it fixed the problem. Hope someone finds this info usefull.

    This worked like a charm!

I had the same error whenever I tried to reply using outlook 2003. (it gave me the path to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE)

hope it will not bother me again.

Well i have been doing some research, and i now know what is meant by the error displaying Buffer Overrun Error.

Basically, the problem is that there are A NUMBER OF VIRUSES on your computer, they are mostly spyware, and are part of a virus group called VUNDO. i dont know what VUNDO means but you know what i mean. I will keep you all updated on this. and what will be used best against these viruses.

these viruses are not potentially harmul, they are basic spyware which are over rulling your command to your camputer.

    Obvious signs of this are:
    - A massive number of pop-ups stating that you should download a free spyware check. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT OPENING ONE OF THESE, AS THESE ARE THE VIRUSES IT SELF TRYING TO INPUT MORE INTO YOUR COMPUTER.
-Errors stating that you have a virus.
-Do Not Bother Using AVG or AVAST anti-virus to find viruses mentioned. these viruses are 2008 viruses and will not be detected by a standard update of your old anti virus.

Do Not Email, just Instant message me, thank you.

  • 1. Please download The Avenger to your Desktop.
    • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
    • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

    2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

    Code:
    Files to delete:

    3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
    • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
    • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
    • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
    • Click Done
    • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
    • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
    4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
    • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
    • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
    • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
    • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
    5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log .

  • Hey, how did you get rid of Vundo completely?  I thought I got rid of it but it's back.  I use symantec antivirus 10.1.6 with regularly updated definitions.  I also ran ad aware and spybot.  This has spread to two other computers on the network.

    Please advise?!

Hi there, i have not had this problem before, but I do have some experience in dealing with trojans etc.  Right now I am using a program called superantispyware, it works all the time for me.  http://www.download.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=superantispyware&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows  just select the free version.  and it does work on vista and xp.

Let me know if this helps.

    Shalom Eli
I am a simple person, i need few steps to understand how to do what you suggest.
    I have a buffer overrun that corrupts my C:\Program Files\programfiles\microsoft office\office11\win.exe
this happens when writing in Spanish in office 2003 English version. It corrupts inC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF the files mssp3es.dll and mssp3es.lex both in charge of spellcheck and dictionary. Same thing happened to Microsoft with Hebrew version 2003, and they made a hotfix. But Microsoft is deaf or blind to what is happening to Spanish spellcheck. If I remove mssp3es.dll or mssp3es.lex, I can write but without the spellcheck. BUT, who knows where the buffer overrun hides. The first time I had it was buffer overrun with IE7.
Could you explain in simple words how to change the Proof to proof.old and do I do it through the Window explorer or elsewhere. Do you know how to find where the overrun is located? HELP!! HAZILU!!
